After months and months of digging and speculating, interacting on different forums and with different people, it finally surfaces. Much to the chagrin of another producer who used the same sample for an unused instrumental, a kid who rarely posts at Philaflava dropped the name of the record just a little while ago. The poster fittingly goes by the name of Midnight Marauder and tonight he truly marauded for our ears and I would just like to extend a thorough thank you to the man who we don't know much about.
Now, for the last few months, this subject has brought about a bit of controversy. The main argument being about producers unveiling their sample sources. Of course, this phenomena goes way back to the late 70's, early 80's, when DJ's used to use different means to hide the names of records they spun. It was usually to make sure another DJ didn't bite and use the same record or to just stay being the only DJ with that record, rendering his material exclusive. Understandable, completely.
But nowadays, things done changed. The internet is a wonderful thing. You got blogs like Kevin Nottingham and Hip Hop Is Read releasing entire album sample sets. You got people over at The-Breaks listing samples for your favorite songs every day, in an easily navigable presentation. You got guys like myself and Roy Johnson doing their own unique sample sets, breakdowns, and challenges. It's a new world. Bask in it! You never know when things can change for the worse.
Some might say that asking what someone sampled is lazy and wack and against what this culture used to represent. Some people say that sharing and building on the information can only lead to good things. The one thing I can add here is that insulting and trying to belittle someone for requesting sample information is an uncalled for, wack move.
There really is no reason for me to get into the argument, I mean, to each his own. If someone doesn't want to give up a sample source, they don't have to. Especially if they are a pretty big name, they can face litigation. And if your name is recognized on a much, much smaller scale, you still don't owe anybody a sample source revelation. But it might help your career out by getting your name out there a little more. In these days, fans want that interactivity with artists.
There's nothing to debate. The credit goes to the writers, performers, producers, musicians, and engineers of the original record. Credit also goes to the hip hop producers for doing that magic that they do so well at turning a little old sample into a beautiful new hip hop joint.
Here's volume 6 from my Baltimore/Washington Dc series. This is one of the compilations I'm most proud of. It's packed with obscurities. Out of the 300+ compilations I've done, this is probably the one I spent the most money on. That 'random rap' doesn't come cheap ya know. Yes DWG, some of this material is actually new to you. I know I say this alot, but I return to volume 6 over and over. The phrase for today is 'shelf life'. To my diggers out there like ThomasV, U/No is Nonchalant's 1st group before she started out on her own. My favorite track though has got to be the cut by 'Capitol Punishment Crew'. Ripped from cassette, the tape cover tells us it was recorded and mixed at 'the studio above Discount Mart'. I have to wonder how many unheard classics were recorded at the mysterious and now much hallowed Discount Mart. Dc natives speak up!

Some of the tracks you might have a hard time tracking down elsewhere include numbers 1-3, 7, 11-13, and 16-20. Remember Marion Berry, crack-smoking mayor from the district ? We all know the bitch set him up! These regional compilations are one of my favorite things to do so if you like them let me know! Thanks for reading.
I wasn't even aware that this DJ Mister Cee mix even existed until the other day when fellow TROY blogger Thomas V made mention of it. So I tracked it down and purchased it. A whopping 38 tracks of classics, appearances, remixes and a slew of unreleased material (11 to be exact).

Since this is a very recent purchase, I didn't make a new cover to match all the other ones (and I think those days are behind me). But I did take the time to scan it in and lay out all new type. Up next is the final installment in this series, a double disc set for “The Best Of Jay-Z.”
This is one of those groups I know almost nothing about, so I can't tell you much. As you can see, they are from Greenville, Mississippi. Although this album contains only six tracks, it is quite enjoyable. Nice smooth g-vibe, with a nice female voice singing on two tracks and a male vocalist singing on the last track. Check the samples, this album is easy to appreciate.

Installment #6 of the Hiero Producer Series: Jay-Biz
What we have here is a two volume set of tracks from yet another criminally-underrated producer in the Hieroglyphics camp. On sheer talent alone, the only Hiero producers that I'd put ahead of Jay-Biz are Domino and A-Plus. Unfortunately, Jay's known production discography contains just over 20 beats, and half of 'em are of the non-album variety. I couldn't even find a proper picture of him on the net, so I had to a crop a photo from "The Shamen" album cover.
Jay-Bizzy, some of you motherfuckers still don't know who is he, so brace yourselves, 'cause he's about to get physical - Pep Love on "The Prose Officially"
So yeah, if you still don't know who is he, then I'd advise that you download both volumes. His standout tracks include "Freshdopedope", the remix for "Get The Girl, Grab The Money & Run", the unreleased Prose track "Hush", etc. Make sure to check out the audio samples, and stay tuned for posts on Toure and Opio.

In 2002/2003 I began doing these compilations that I post all the time. Back then, they were mostly for my own consumption. Sure, I'd share with friends but never really on the internet. In the past seven years or so I have really gotten into them. These days, listening to albums is the exception not the rule.
Once in awhile I do something specifically for the blog. I'll think about the spirit of T.R.O.Y., what it means to me, what it represents to hip hop. Todays post is one such example. The nineties boom bap presented to you here is timeless, inspired, still as musical now as it was then. Will Hook or Black Saturday be any less relevant 20 years from now ? My answer is no. As a youth I was exposed to many different sounds. Classical music, rock, jazz, reggae, afro-cuban percussion, these were a few of the genres I was introduced to. I know that I am not alone in this among my fellow contributors and our readers. All of these influences have left deep imprints and in this way hip hop will speak volumes to future generations. I hope you and even your kids are still digging this one many years down the road.

As usual this is peppered with some rare tunes. Let me know what's new to you and leave some comments if you like the selection.
Somewhere down the line after the Method Man and Redman mixes, I found this one for Biggie. Great mix of some lesser known songs, appearances, remixes and two real nice freestyles from the good ol' days.

Being the freak that I am, I did not like the cover it came with and made myself a new one to match the other two. But for the purists who only want the original, I scanned it in, cleaned it up and threw in all new type for an exact match. Coming soon will be “The Best Of Mobb Deep” and double disc set for “The Best Of Jay-Z.”
Here we have a rare promotional Duck Down Sampler vinyl from 1996. If you are familiar with the Headz Ain't Ready VLS, no instrumentals were featured for the main track. Well, the sampler starts off with a dub instrumental of Headz Ain't Ready(Original Buckshot Mix). I know some of you are already saying "why didn't they just put the full instrumental without any vocals", well I don't know. The next track is Let Tha Brainz Blo (Babee Pall's Dolla Cab Lab Mix) by Heltah Skeltah. I don't know if this is supposed to be a Baby Paul remix but it sounds identical to the album version on Nocturnal; maybe it was released before the album? The B-Side wins again on this 12": Boot Camp Click - Niggaz Ain't Ready (Dirty F*cking Mix). While the original Headz Ain't Ready 12" version isn't censored, instead of saying "Headz" on the chorus, it now says "Niggaz". I believe that it is a super rare version that can only be found on this sampler which hasn't been ripped on the blogsphere until now. Enjoy!
For as long as any of us can remember, sneakers have been synonymous with hip-hop. It's a perfect marriage and to this day both use one another for inspiration. Whether it was RUN-D.M.C. telling us about their Adidas or Nas' confessions on his addiction or favorite brand, sneakers have always been prevalent within the hip-hop community. Today it's common to hear cats like Fat Joe, Jadakiss, Rick Ross, Kanye West, Jay-Z,Bun B and T.I. to commonly reference sneakers. (Click all hyperlinks)
But out of all the sneakers, there is only one staple of the hip-hop community and that has to be the Air Jordans.
A few years back there was this preeminent documentary titled Just For Kicks. It was about the sneaker phenomena and the marriage of hip-hop. It featured the likes of Grandmaster Caz, D.M.C.,Damon Dash, Bobbito Garcia & King Ad Rock spittin' their favorite stores or dropping science on the birth of kicks like Nike Air Force Ones aka Uptowns.
I would strongly encourage those, like myself, who are indeed sneaker addicts to cop the movie at your local store, but for in the meantime definitely check out the full 82 minute video here.
It's no secret that emcees influence many of us. It's also no secret that those very emcees are influenced by their environment, so in essence we all play a role in this. A lot of stand in line for hours (some days) at places like Alife Rivington Club, Flight Club, Shoe Gallery or Ubiq just for the latest limited release, retro or exclusive colorway.
While sneaker companies go to great lengths at befriending rappers like Bun B, Kanye West, Fat Joe or Nelly in hopes of promoting their brands to millions, it's ultimately us the consumers who dedicate what becomes the hot item. Because after all if it don't make dollars it don't make sense, right?
So next time you're in line at Foot Locker and you happen to do a double take because you think you just saw your favorite album appear on a sneaker shirt, rest assure you're the reason why. Jordan Brand is not run by Michael Jordan. It's not even run by the HDIC, Gentry Humphrey, who after all is just a Jordan stan. No, It's run by young guns scrambling to reconnect with you and take your dollars. The great MJ couldn't name 5 A Tribe Called Quest tracks if his life depended on it. It's the recent 20-something grad who his trying to appeal to the 30-something recovering addict. It's not a coincidence that Jordan Brand just released 3 hip-hop related themed shirts that all happen to feature 3 bona fide classic albums covers.
So next time you pop in that Midnight Marauders album will you be rockin' your Jordans to make the cipher complete? --Philaflava Related Link: Charles Barkley Limited Tees
Once I got my hands on the Method Man mix, I discovered there was one for The Funk Doctor Spock. Sold. Again with this Mister Cee mix, nothing too fancy, nothing too special, one good freestyle, several remixes and one live track. But the real catch on this disc are the two unreleased tracks. Ten years later (or so), I believe this is the only place you can find them.

My original cover was in a sorry state, so I scanned it in, cleaned it up and threw in all new type exactly the same as the original. Coming soon will be “The Best Of The Notorious B.I.G.” and “The Best Of Mobb Deep” in the series.
Hittin' ya with volume 7 of the Philly retrospective series today. There are some underground gems here for you phanatics. Starting off is a classic banger by Lux. As far as I know this was his first official tape. If he did something else earlier than 1994 I'd love to know. Next up is a dark, haunting tune by Tainted Mindz. I'm assuming most of our readers are familiar with the two releases they put out, 'Killadelphia' and 'All In The Flip.' If not, let me know and i'll up them soon. Other favorites on volume 7 include tracks 7,8 and 11. One of these days I'll post The Kartel album if anyone out there wants to hear it. Philadelphia is an endless gold mine for diggers and this compilation delivers in spades. Download here

You'll notice a couple of tracks are from New York, not Philadelphia. That's how it goes sometimes when I'm compiling these regional compilations. I find things out later. In any case, I hope you enjoy the selection!
The midwest is an enigma. It's a melting pot for hip hop due in large part to its location and musical diversity. Chicago is far removed from either shore. The heartland exhibits both east and west coast influences. 'Who's Da Killa' is worlds away from 'Next Contestant' but each is unequivocally dope for their own style. Both represent the 'Windy City'. Here's volume 1 of the midwest's best, with more to come.
01 (2:53) Awol - Dear Abby (Detroit 1994) 02 (7:53) Tru - Who's Da Killa (Chicago 1992) 03 (5:05) Kinghood cykos - Mind Of A Cyko (Michigan 1992) 04 (5:25) Criminal Behavior - What's It Gon' Take (chicago 1993) 05 (3:57) Schoolly D - I Know You Want To Kill Me (Ya, Ya..Philadelphia 1994) 06 (3:26) Figure Uv Speech - Next Contestant (Chicago 1993) 07 (3:50) JCD And The Dawg Lb - St. Louis Niggas (1992) 08 (6:08) Ganksta Rhyme Mystro - D-E-T-R-O-I-T Don't Give A Fuck (1992) 09 (3:44) Devious Steve - I Got That Nine ( Michigan 1994) 10 (4:51) Crucial Conflict - Slow Down (Chicago 1996) 11 (4:05) EC & Rubberoom - Taste of Chicago 1997 12 (4:05) Indo-G and Lil Blunt - Trapped in the Game (St Louis 1994) 13 (6:41) Detroit's Most Wanted - All About Ya Yo (1994)
Why is Schoolly D on a midwest mix ? It fit well, and he'd pound Twista in a cage fight. That's why.
I searched all over the internet to try to find out the names of these two MCs, but I couldn't find anything. Then I decided to ask 3xkrazy, who ripped this tape himself, but with no luck. There are no names printed anywhere in the tape's cover. The only bit of information that I found on the internet is that this tape is a rare release out of Pittsburg (California) that was sought by many before finally it was ripped. As you can see, this tape is short, but the two tracks are good. Try it yourself.
Side A:

Big thanks to 3xkrazy for ripping and sharing this rare release.
Bringing you the 5th volume of my Baltimore and Washington Dc series this time. Today's post is not one to sleep on. A few of these might be hard to track down elsewhere, such as 1,10,12,17 and 18. It's a shame Derrick Rebel never had an album out, to my knowledge at least. I have a few other selections from him and the man brings heat. Another Baltimore rapper to watch out for is Silohuette. Alkuttraz, track 11 is for you man. Hope it's new! On another note, I am not entirely sure about D.C. Da Messenger. I've read that he was from Lanham, but also that he was from Michigan so I really do not know. Lanham was home to some other artists with pretty universal styles so 'Avenue Bum Rush' could easily be Maryland rap, but Michigan would not surprise me either. If anyone out there can clear that up I'd love to know. Also, tracks 5 and 6 are a mystery to me. Basically the same thing, I am not sure which artist/song title is right. Regardless, this compilations slams like a heavyweight. If you dig that underground mid-atlantic sound you'll be coming back to volume 5 again and again. Enjoy!
01 (4:08) Derrick Rebel - Hit Em' Hard (Baltimore 1998) 02 (6:04) D.c. Pipe Bomb, Act-A-Nut, Mack Vill'n and Foolish P. form this group. This was their debut release and besides that, they have one more album on their count, but that album dropped 6 years after the debut in 2002.
You think everything is shiny, bright and marvelous in The City Of Lights? If so, then this album right here is perfect material for you. This will open your eyes about what was happening in Las Vegas besides gambling, fun, partying, and women. You will see a darker side of those "lights." We encourage you to listen the samples first, to see if this isn't too big of a bite for you. After listening this album you may never look at "Sin City" the same way ever again.

Disregard the pasteoid to doing the interview. Invest the 3 minutes, have a laugh or two and listen to what Gary Grice aka GZA has to say. Peace to Chelsea from KarmaLoop TV.
And just to keep the laughs going let us not forget the extremely awkward gun-2-da-dome Al-Qaeda style video by the man GZA was just talking about.

Installment #5 of the Hiero Producer Series: Casual
Who doesn't have talent behind the boards in the Hieroglyphics crew? I haven't even gotten to Jay-Biz or Toure as of yet, and we're already on installment #5.
The man behind the beat for "Catch A Bad One" is.....Casual??? When I first found out that he produced the lead single off of the "No Need For Alarm" LP, it absolutely blew my mind. If you think about it, "Catch A Bad One" is probably Del's most well-known track outside of "Mistadobalina", and the production is most definitely a major reason as to why that track is so popular amongst hip hop fans. The truly remarkable thing is that Cas was born in '77 or thereabouts, so he was only in his mid-teens when he produced all of the tracks that you'll find on volume 1, including the aforementioned "Catch A Bad One", which was released in '93.
Aside from his contributions on the officially-released Hiero albums, he also produced quite a few bangers of the non-album variety. The remix for "That's How It Is" is fucking incredible, and it's easily my favorite Casual beat. I'm also a big fan of his work on the "Wrongplace" remix, as well as the demos for "Gotta Lotta", "Can U Feel It", "Hydra", etc.
