My Tapes by Basta aka KYOZAI Pt. 5

You might know Basta (aka Kyozai) as being the owner of the rare cassette blog, Music-Thingz. Recently, he blessed us with a nice portion of his tape collection at philaflava T.R.O.Y. forum.

Here at The T.R.O.Y. blog, we wanted to give these tapes their deserved shine and Basta the proper recognition he's earned, to the people outside of the philaflava forum.

I will split his tapes in several posts, giving you enough time to digest this massive work.

There will be no previews, but c'mon, the hilariously awesome covers alone warrant a download.

Enjoy!

Superegular & The Stoupe Produced EPs of the '90s.

It’s time for some more literal Phila flava. Before Stoupe the Enemy of the Mankind began to work almost exclusively for members of Jedi Mind Tricks and Army of the Pharaohs (with exceptions for artists like Canibus, Guru and Reks) he was starting out with groups like Soulcraft, Doublespeek and Neso in the mid to late nineties.

“…I had a very brief career as an MC. Stoupe and I had a group called Doublespeek with another friend. We put out one 12” in 1996 just before the birth of Superegular. I think it went copper? I never saw the final SoundScan numbers on that one.” ~ Ryan Donahue (in a Baby Grande Interview)
This is that one 12”, which, if you can find, will now likely cost you a couple bills. But now thanks to the Illest EPs thread (among other places), you can hear it right here:

Doublespeek – Trial By Stone EP (192 CBR) (1996 on Onesoul Productions)

A1 - Trial By Stone ft. Arch Leon & Yan (Produced by Stoupe)

A2 - Trial By Stone (Remix) ft. Arch Leon & Yan (Produced by Stoupe)

A3 - Trial By Stone (Instrumental) (Produced by Stoupe)

B1 - Remind Body ft. Arch Leon & Yan (Produced by Stoupe)

B2 - Remind Body (Instrumental) (Produced by Stoupe)

B3 - Black China ft. Arch Leon, Jay Block & Yan (Produced by Stoupe)

As forum member kimani said:
...this EP is very good, give it a listen if you haven't, regardless of whether or not you like Stoupe or Jedi Mind Tricks.

And
(thanks to Kevin Beacham) this is yet another T.R.O.Y. exclusive, one of the earlier Superegular releases:

Neso – The Move / Mad Coolout / The Balance 12” / VLS (256 / 320 CBR) (1997 on Superegular Recordings)

(Picture courtesy of Kevin Beacham, click for big.)

A1 - The Move (Produced by Stoupe)

A2 - The Move (Instrumental) (Produced by Stoupe)

A3 - The Move (Remix) (Produced by Stoupe)

B1 - Mad Coolout ft. Teniweti, Arch Leon, Jack Block, Kaosm, Oddball & Qan (Produced by Stoupe)

B2 - Mad Coolout (Instrumental) (Produced by Stoupe)

B3 - The Move (Remix Instrumental) (Produced by Stoupe)

B4 - The Balance ft. Karesh (Produced by Stoupe)

Two other early Stoupe produced releases, a ’96 single / EP also by Neso called Subject to Change and ‘94’s Common Thread EP by Soulcraft still haven’t surfaced online (at least not yet).

But then of course there's the most well known Stoupe produced EP from the '90s and that's Jedi Mind Trick's first release, The Amber Probe EP:

Jedi Mind Tricks
– The Amber Probe EP (192 CBR) (1996 on Superegular Recordings)

A1 -
Neva Antiquated (Produced by Stoupe)

A2 -
Neva Antiquated (Instrumental) (Produced by Stoupe)

A3 -
Communion: The Crop Circle Thesis ft. The Lost Children of Babylon (Produced by Stoupe)

B1 -
Neva Antiquated (Dark Jedi Remix) (Produced by Stoupe)

B2 -
Neva Antiquated (Dark Jedi Remix Instrumental) (Produced by Stoupe)

B3 -
Books of Blood: The Coming of Tan ft. El Eloh (Produced by Stoupe)

Thanks to
both Ho1ogramz and kimani for posting / reupping Doublespeek links, to the Kaknado blog for providing a working link to the Amber Probe EP and as always, mad props to Kevin Beacham, this time around for scanning the one sheet and ripping / upping the original links to Neso's The Move 12" in this crazy thread, which contains a lot of freestyles, demos and assorted rarities (if you didn't already know).

Major Figgas Miscellany

Over at the forum, contributor GoodLook was kind enough to drop some joints from Philadelphia's own Major Figgas, a crew that may be directly unfamiliar to many, but have indirectly exerted some influence on the music industry in the past decade through their frequent collaborations and partnerships with some of your favorite rappers:

Major Figgas was founded in the Erie Ave area of Philadelphia by Gillie Da Kid and Abliva, who were friends from the neighborhood.[1] They knew Bump J, Dutch and Rolx from all living in the same area, and eventually expanded after inducting Spade and Bianca. Chops, Rucie, L deniro and Dirty Rik all soon came aboard. After releasing several underground tapes, they released the full-length Figgas 4 Life independently which landed them a deal with RuffNation Records/Warner Bros. Records. At this time they had an ongoing back and forth fued with Jay-Z & his Roc-A-Fella rap group State Property. An expanded edition of the album was issued in 2000, which reached #115 on the Billboard 200 and #29 on the U.S. R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.[2] Their lone major radio hit was "Yeah That's Us", which hit #2 on the U.S. Rap Singles chart and #34 on the R&B Singles chart.[3]They received a ASCAP Song of the Year award for "Yeah that's us" in 2001. (source- Wikipedia)
Here are the songs - let us know if you're feeling this because GoodLook suggests that he has more rare tracks to share if anyone is interested.

Gillie, Bump J, Dutch, Beans & Journalist - Philly Finest (Original version)

Ab Liva ft. Truth Hurts - Don't Fuck With Us (Prod. Dr. Dre)

Dutch & Spade - If You Want It

Major Figgas - Untitled (98/99) (Throwback)

Ab-Liva - Get That Money

Gillie Da Kid - Slide Off (New shit)

Gillie Da Kid - Somethin to Bounce To

Gillie Da Kid - Holla Back Rmx ft. Reed Dollaz, Joey Jihad

Major Figgas, Beans, Phillys Most Wanted - It's On Freestyle (DMX beat)(Liva kills it)

Philly Retrospective Volume 8

Bringing you volume 8 from my Philadelphia series today. Like the previous ones, this edition has some relatively obscure and very dope cuts. Starting things off strong is 'East Wild West' by Rahsheed. I scored this single for about 3 bucks from a local shop. Favorites are probably numbers 3-5, but the rest are bangers too. I cheated a little bit with the Pittsburgh tracks, hope you like them.

02 (2:49) Chief Kamachi - No Me Now 2006

20 (3:31) L. R.o.c.k. - Outstanding 1990

One note, I know Lu Cipha is from Pennsylvania but I'm not sure which city. If anyone out there can tell me I'd love to know. Give this collection a spin, it's got some replay value.

Touring The States: Philadelphia, PA

Our regular forum poster soopacee, from Pottsville PA, was always blessing us with his tape rips, Philly artists. Amongst all of his rips, I chose to blog this one. I don't know nothing about Sun Risers. The meaning behind their names, their other releases, and any other facts remain shrouded in mystery. But all of that actually doesn't matter, because this album will never collect dust. Expect to play it weekly. Am I right?

The Kartel - Players Only Live Once (Philadelphia 1997)

Here it is, in response to popular demand. Today I'm bringing you a flawless album by 'The Kartel' out of Philadelphia. This is one of my all time favorite east coast groups. Sometimes when I am using tracks from albums for regional compilations like my New Jersey series, I tend to listen to the full album less after awhile. This generally occurs for a variety of reasons. However in the case of The Kartel, it's not for lack of continuity. This album is well done from start to finish. What you'll find is tight vocal skills and chemistry with clean production. It's the type of mid 90's east coast hip hop that has us all coming back for more, over a decade later. My own favorite tracks are probably, well 1-13. I hope you dig this classic Philly release as much as I do.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=00KG9DPG

01 1:00 Intro
02 3:00 Verbal Animosity
03 4:04 Money Talks
04 1:09 Interlude
05 3:31 Quadruple
06 3:20 Monopoly
07 2:59 Nothing But Timberlands
08 2:23 The Prophet
09 4:12 NFC
10 3:50 The Game Of Life
11 3:37 Reprcussions
12 0:36 Players Only Live Once
13 4:17 Bonus Track

Production was done by 'Groove Da Moast'. They recorded at Rhythm Central Studio in Philadelphia. I do not know if the album came out on wax as well, but the cd was released in 1997.

Philly Retrospective Volume 7

Hittin' ya with volume 7 of the Philly retrospective series today. There are some underground gems here for you phanatics. Starting off is a classic banger by Lux. As far as I know this was his first official tape. If he did something else earlier than 1994 I'd love to know. Next up is a dark, haunting tune by Tainted Mindz. I'm assuming most of our readers are familiar with the two releases they put out, 'Killadelphia' and 'All In The Flip.' If not, let me know and i'll up them soon. Other favorites on volume 7 include tracks 7,8 and 11. One of these days I'll post The Kartel album if anyone out there wants to hear it. Philadelphia is an endless gold mine for diggers and this compilation delivers in spades.

Philly Retrospective Volume 6

Today I am bringing you the 6th mix in the Philadelphia series. I was driving around in the car today cause I can't get enough of this one. Burn it to cd and put it in your ride. You'll see why. Track 1 is a serious banger! The beat has been used elsewhere, but the effect is magnified by Schoolly's voice. Some of these tracks are pretty obscure so if you are into philly stuff turn off the snooze button and roll out of bed. For those rarified vinyl collector fiends, check out Legion Of Doom in particular. Don't stop there though cause this whole mix is packed.

Here's philly retrospective volume 5 today. This mix is actually not strictly Philadelphia. Choked Out is from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As is generally the case, some of the material on this compilation is extremely hard to find! In particular, the John Doe track is from a single which almost doesn't exist. philly retrospective volumes 2 and 3

As promised, here are the next couple installments in my Philadelphia compilations series. Both of these have some pretty rare material on them. The track by F-Mob on volume 2 was something i heard on a radio show in Olympia, Washington back in 1993. Their album 'Once In A Blue Moon' was mostly instrumental/acid jazz. 'Pump Pump' was one of the only hip hop tracks on the album. It also came out as a 12" single, for good reason. The track is a burner. Check the beat!

I put these 2 compilations together back in 2007. There are at least 20 more coming which feature all kinds of underground Philadelphia artists so stay with us while we bring you the flava.

Philly Retrospective Volume 1

Hip hop in Philadelphia has a long and deep history. It was one of the 1st areas outside of New York to produce recorded hip hop. Checking ebay listings usually reveals a small number of Philadelphia releases at high prices. The city does get a fair amount of recognition and there are lots of Philadelphia artists who have made their way onto the national scene. Closer examination and constant research reveals a very prolific underground there. Many of the artists I'm going to feature in this 23-volume series were hardly heard or known about outside the city limits. This 1st volume is comprised of artists who are probably familiar for the most part, but stay tuned. Over a period of time, I will post 22 other Philadelphia compilations made up of the rarest/dopest gems I could find. You're in for some surprises, so stay tuned!

Department of corrections:

After I finished this one, I discovered the Rasheed on track 12 is actually from Texas, and is not the same artist as Rasheed from Philadelphia. Woops. Hope y'all will forgive me for the mistake. Check back for updates, will be bringing you more of these compilations to your sound system soon.
