The Bridge is NOT Over pt. 1

This is not a collection of hip hop instrumentals. It isn't a collection of beats with played instruments like De La Soul's "I Be Blowin", nor will you hear sample-rich beats with layered pieces meshing harmoniously like the Cunnylinguists perfectly executed Remember Me [Abstract Reality]. None of these work alone. They are part of the song, "musical bridges" that usually join two halves of songs.

I'll start this off chronologically(and then proceed to completely lose respect for father time).

1. RUN DMC - RAGTIME

Run DMC were pretty much breaking ground with each song they made on their first three albums, sometimes to amazing success. On the other hand they tried a few experiments that didn't even dent hiphop's history. Mixing hiphop with a Big Band sound was one of those. After hearing "Ragtime" though, I personally would not mind hearing more of these experiments ;)

2. DIGITAL UNDERGROUND - NUTTIN NIS FUNKY

Although "Same Song" would fit MUCH better in this compilation of instruments wildin' out over hiphop tracks, I fuckin' hate the organ sound they used on that track. Instead, "Nuttin Nis Funky" provides a great slow galloping beat for a very hiphop-ish instrument to freestyle with tranquility: The turntable. DJ Fuze is by far my favorite DJ, so I place this track on a pedestal with a plaque under it that says "DJ's: You Will NEVER Make Nuttin Nis Funky".

3. BRAND NUBIAN - CLAIMIN' I'M A CRIMINAL

One thing I would never have expected was Brand Nubian + acoustic guitar solos...

4. DJ QUIK - ONLY FOR THE MONEY

Dj Quik showed you how classy and musical he could be on his second album "Way II Fonky". In between his gangbangs, his late nite pimpin' and his soulglo-spraying, he managed to find time to really add to his tracks with instruments.

5. MC EIHT - STREIHT UP MENACE

And now for his one time biggest enemy, MC Eiht. Yup no G, just like Quik said "you aint got no G in you". When I heard "Streiht Up Menace", I figured that this would be the sound of his first solo album. I was wrong.

6. TOO SHORT - ONLY THE STRONGEST SURVIVE

Also on the Menace II Society album, we have a Too Short track, produced by the Dangerous Crew who have more than earned their bragging rights with their talented musicians to add mad depth to their tracks. Did that just read bork bork? Sorry let's let the music speak for itself!

7. D-NICE - STRAIGHT FROM THE BRONX

With his sophomore album "To The Rescue", he pulled a Kool G Rap on us with this track. They are the same in the respect that they both utilize fake instruments played by keyboards, in this both cases being a cheesy casio-sounding saxophone.

8. KOOL G RAP - STREETS OF NY

And now for the original 5-cent sound of that jazz musician trying to impress you for some change. With those minor piano chords, I'm impressed, here's 10 dollars, buy yerself a flask of moonshine.

9. EAZY-E - EAZY STREET

All Eazy E fans know that he's probably funnier than he is a cold hearted killer and this freestyle "skat" leaves NO doubt behind.

10. FREESTYLE FELLOWSHIP - INNERCITY BOUNDARIES

South Central, LA, home to another gang-riddled area, gave birth to another hiphop act influenced by jazz-skatting: Freestyle Fellowship. This Daddy-O produced track (crazy huh?) lifted the whole album by 100 cool points when he made the four MC's flow over this all-instrument played track.

11. GOLD MONEY - NOTHING

I was just mentioning this album in the Pee Wee post I did. It's the longest in this list at 3:41, and it's also the most unique. I say this because it's obviously jazz, but its got this funky backbone that makes your head bop hard. The drums are tremendously Digital Underground, and make you realize that, yes, they had their clappin-snappin sound 15 years before it got overused ad-nauseam in so many 2000ish hit songs.

I have more to come, but if anyone can help me identify more of these, I would love to actually blend these together in the future.

Who Flipped It Better? "The Rub"

George and Gwen put out "The Rub" back in 1975, on the album "Together". It still sounds perfectly fresh today! Listen as the funk makes you bop your head...

George and Gwen Mc Crae - THE RUB

How many producers out there have heard this and thought, "shit, I shoulda flipped it".

Well, it's well known that no one owns no loops, so, go ahead and compete with the best:

In Retrospect: Brand Nubian - Everything Is Everything

In Retrospect is going a new theme we're doing where we present you with an album that is much better than you originally thought. An album that may have received mixed reviews or happened to shunned initially but as the years went on you slowly realize it was better than you gave it credit for.

First up, Brand Nubian's Everything Is Everything. '94 was chock full of dope releases so it's understandable how this might have either fell though the cracks or got mistreated by the competition. Fresh off one of the dopest follow-up albums without their franchise player, "In God We Trust" was an absolute masterpiece of the new two-man team. A balls to the wall album where there is no apologizing, no cheating the listener of dauntless lyrics and definitely no hiding from Lord Jamar or Sadat X ideologies.

The Nubians returned a year later with Everything Is Everything, a safer and more mature album if you will. What many people don't realize is that Lord Jamar was always responsible for the majority of the production on the Brand Nubian albums. Even though they did a few tracks here and there, many people think of Pete Rock, Stimulated Dummies, Diamond D, Lord Finesse or Buckwild as the prominent producers in the groups catalogs.

Jamar laces things on the infectious "Word Is Bond" all the way into the ridiculously underrated posse cut "Step Into Da Cipher" featuring Serge, Maestro Manny and blogosphere favorite Snagglepuss.

The group tackled germane topics and wholeheartedly ripped tracks like "Claimin I'm A Criminal," "Hold On" and "Return of The Dread." If anything, this album showcased Lord Jamars growth as a producer and an emcee. While it was difficult to outshine Puba on "One For All" and the controversial Sadat X on "In God We Trust," it's on "Everything Is Everything" that Jamar truly shines.

The album was full of head-nodding tracks like "Alladat" featuring Busta Rhymes and the remix of "Lick Dem Muthaphuckas" originally found on the Menace II Society soundtrack. While it might not be better than any previous Nuban efforts, it surely isn't an album that you could call anything less than great. This is their "Beats, Rhymes & Life." --Philaflava

Brand Nubian - The Now Rule Files EP [1989-1997]

Here it is! One Leg Up Records comes through with another batch of unreleased tracks and demo mixes. This time they ran down on Puba for some ill Brand Nubian joints most of us never knew about. I'm typing this in advance so you can get this download asap.

From the snippets, "How Ya Livin'", "Mind Your Business"(original mix), and "Probable Cause"(original mix) are sounding incredible. "Love Vs. Hate"(alternative mix) sounds basically the same, except Sadat kicks a completely different verse. There might be minor differences with the beat, but nothing that I immediately noticed.

Here's Haj "4XL" from OLU's description:

“How Ya Livin’” is a previously unheard of demo recorded prior to “One For All” and it is produced by none other than, the chocolate boy wonder, Pete Rock! The vintage track comes complete with the Soul Brother #1's trademark cuts as well. “I Ain’t Goin’ Out Like That” is an uptempo early Nubian joint as well. On this track you hear Puba taking parting shots at Strong City Records and declaring that both his Masters of Ceremony days and style is over! “The Devil” is a conscious record, that was scrapped prior to “One For All”, but serious Grand Puba fans will undoubtedly recognize that the hook and song concept was later revisited for the track “Soul Controller” on Puba’s debut LP, “Reel To Reel”. “Mind Your Business”, as you might recall, was a b-side only track released during “Reel To Reel”. This original version sports a Hall and Oates sample that could not be cleared, prompting Dante Ross / Stimulated Dummies to remix the song for the 12”. Fortunately in 2009, the version that Grand Puba preferred is finally available to collectors. “Where is Puba?” is somewhat of an early version of “Check It Out”. The vocalist that appears on this track was an artist who Puba was recording with before Mary J. Blige. The original version of “Probable Cause” features a different beat then the one that made the final version of “Foundation”. As you might recall, the released version used the Grover Washington Jr. “Knucklehead” sample (best known on K-Solo’s “Fugitive”). This version is a LOT better in my opinion and I have no idea why they changed it? Last but not least, the “Love vs. Hate” alternate version treats us to a completely different Sadat X vocal performance and still maintains to be a favorite from the “Foundation” project.

Thanks to HAJ at One Leg Up for digging up unreleased gems that we actually care about.
If you need to catch up on all of their previous "limited" vinyls, download them all here.

Professor Griff & Society - Blackdraft (1993) VLS

Here we have the 12-inch of Professor Griff & Society's Blackdraft off Griff's "Disturn N Tha Peace" album released in 1993 on Luke Records. Besides the two great remixes which are remixed by Griff, this 12" is worth for its b-side(...wins again) because of its obscure forgotten non-album "5% Percenter" posse cut "Verbal Intercourse"(pre-OB4CL) featuring Lord Jamar & Sadat X of Brand Nubian and Wise Intelligent of Poor Righteous Teachers. Enjoy this 12" and make sure to add this cut to your favorite hip-hop obscure list!

A1. Professor Griff & Society - Blackdraft (Blackdot Remix)
A2. Professor Griff & Society - Blackdot Instrumental
A3. Professor Griff & Society - Voicez From The Essence (Blaccapella)
A4. Professor Griff & Society - Blackdraft LP Version
B1. Professor Griff & Society - Blacksteel Pineal Gland Mix
B2. Professor Griff & Society - 107. Live (At The Slave Theater)

Brand Nubian - Slow Down (Waterfalls Remix and Sample)

What we have here is a pretty rare remix of the Nubians' classic anti- girlfriend stealing your sneakers and trading them for crack anthem, produced by Frankenstein from Canada.
You'll either love it or hate it. I first heard this when Kimani uploaded it in a remix compilation at the T.R.O.Y. forum, which then got posted here.

Right away, you'll notice that you can still here the original beat drowned out a little bit in the background. My first thought was that maybe there was an acapella for Slow Down that left elements of the beat in. Kind of like how Eric B and Rakim had that mix of 'In The Ghetto' with only the drums and vocals. And Mf Doom had that mix of 'Go With The Flow' with just the rhymes and drums on that Fondle 'Em single.
But I didn't remember anything like that for Slow Down, so I brought my question back to the forum. Kimani, vaporized, and myself all agree that this Frankenstein guy must have just eq'ed most of the low end out of 'Slow Down' and threw his beat over it. If you have any other ideas or info, hit up the comments.

Due to some household inconveniences, to put it very mildly, I spent last weekend up at my girl's family's house in Allentown, PA. During my visit, of course I had to find somewhere to dig for some gems. Luckily, I found this little record store about 5 miles from where I was staying, in the town of Bethlehem, PA. I managed to round up a good dozen or so bangers for a small price.
Among them was John Klemmer's 1972 album, 'Waterfalls', on ABC Impulse. This record would be where I caught the sample used for the Brand Nubian remix in question. I also found the original vinyl with the cut that was sampled by Buckwild for the Beastie Boys 'Get It Together' remix and a couple of other gem pieces. Another time for all of that.

As a bonus, the vinyl single of the original Slow Down and the entire sample source song are included in this download.

Fifty Remixes You Need To Hear (41-50)

Today we present the final installment of the series. We hope that you were introduced to music that is new and beautiful to your ears. Be sure to check out Selections 1-10, Selections 11-20, Selections 21-30, and Selections 31-40 as well.

41. Lord Finesse "Hip 2 Da Game" (Buckwild Remix)

The original was a near-perfect quintessential Lord Finesse production. Somehow, some way Buckwild managed to improve upon it, matching the grandiosity of Finesse's boasts with lush, sweeping music.

42. Tragedy "Funk Mode" (Large Pro Remix)

43. Brand Nubian "Concerto In X Minor" (Remix)

"On the real-tip let's take a field trip from the ghetto / You pick the time and we'll meet in the meadow/ To discuss racial issues and tension/ New York's a violent keg did I forget to mention..."

44. Lord Finesse ft. Big L "Yes You May" (Remix)

AG and Percee-P are replaced by Big L and a drum heavy beat. L spits non-stop quotables and Finesse displays his mastery of similes and unabashed shit talking.
45a. Common Sense "Resurrection" (Extra P Remix)

45b. Common Sense "Resurrection (Large Pro Remix)

46. Chino XL "Kreep" (Video Mix)

47. Beatnuts "No Equal" (Remix)

The original was the greatest vibraphone-laced death threat aimed at Das Efx ever. This remix makes the original sound like the fucking Barney The Dinosaur theme song in comparison.

48. Nice N' Smooth "Cash In My Hands" (Remix)

49. Pharcyde "Passin' Me By" (Remix)

50. Public Enemy "How To Kill A Radio Consultant" (Chuck Chillout Remix)

The Most Prominent Member Out The Group (Pause)

Everybody wants to be Mick or Paul, but it doesn't always work out that way. Sometimes the group's core isn't always the lead-- take Lars Ulrich or Pete Townshend for example. And sometimes a group gains very little notoriety all together, but below are a few rap groups that we hold near and dear and their most prominent members.

Fu-Schnickens

Let's be real for a second: Fu-Schnickens had 3 members and most of us only recall one. While they had a few hits like "True-Fu-Schnick," "La Schmoove" and the Shaq laced "Whats Up Doc," Chip Fu was the only talent out the crew and arguably a better Das EFX impersonator than Skoob or Krazy Drayzy. Chip Fu is still trying to make a name for himself appearing on various projects and most recently the Nas' "Where Are They Now?" remix. Meanwhile somewhere at a Gray's Papaya you could probably find the other two members Moc Fu and Poc Fu sharing the grill duties.

Answer: Chip-Fu

Brand Nubian

We all know Puba was the best and there is no question "One For All" is their magnum opus, but the one guy who never quite got his props was Sadat X. Mr. Murphy is responsible for keeping this group relevant past 1990. He won't ever beincluded in discussions for the best rapper, though one could make a valid argument that he should be placed somewhere in the Top 40. Sadat X had more than just a voice, he also had a likeability factor that is extremely rare these days. He was witty and more importantly provided the much needed balance to the Nubians. Many people don't realize just how great "In God We Trust" or "Everything For Everything" are and on both albums Grand Puba is M.I.A.. Without those albums you wouldn't have Brand Nubian today and for that Derek X is the most important member of Brand Nubian. Because after all, aren't most of us trying to forget about Lord Jamar after we awkwardly saw his cock in HBO's Oz?

Answer: Sadat X

Ill Al Skratch

If you ask me both Ill and Al Skratch are the sample people because they both said the same shit. If it wasn't asking us "Where My Homiez?" it was telling us to creep with them or letting us know they were that Brooklyn/Uptown connection. Don't get me wrong, I fucking love "Creep With Me" as I think it's one of the better stupid simple summertime albums we had in the 90's, but neither of them are winning Rhyme of The Month anytime soon.

Answer: It's a wash!

The Artifacts

Do I even need to go into detail about this one? Tame One is the reason The Facts were great for two albums. In fact, I'd go ahead and say T-Ray deserves to be the 2nd most important member out the group. While El Da Sensei was a nice compliment to Tame, neither were able to duplicate success once the group split. El has dropped several solo albums that most people equate to lyrical NyQuil and Tame has dropped several albums/mixtapes that all have showed promised but lacked one or two things---production and El Da Sensei.

Answer: Tame One

Organized Konfusion

See "The Artifacts" with Pharoahe Monch playing the role of Tame One and Prince Poetry as El Da Sensei.

Winner: Pharoahe Monch

Souls of Mischief

A-Plus, Opio, Phesto & Tajai make up the group. They've dropped 4 albums to date. One being a must-own and the others being a must-download at your own risk. When you think about it SOM were rather vanilla. But if you had to pick one as the best it has to be A-Plus simply because he produced most of their hits, including "'93 Til Infinity." I still wouldn't be able to pick one out in a police line-up.

Winner: A-Plus

Lords of The Underground

The L.O.T.U.G. were pretty big for a minute with the help of Marley Marl, K-Def and Pete Rock. "Here Come The Lords" may have not aged well but there is no denying that it was afavorite among many of us. I just wish they stopped making music after "Keepers of The Funk" in '94 because their last few albums made it extremely difficult for me to enjoy "Funky Child" or "Chief Rocka." Was I the only one who was duped into buying "Resurrection" in '99 featuring a cameo by Da Brat? No thank you guys. Stay the fuck retired please.

Winner: DoItAll if only for his cameo appearance in the series finale of The Sopranos.

Double Down

On T.R.O.Y. you're going to see an abundance of mixes. All of which should be downloaded so do yourself a favor and cop an external hard drive because we haven't even got started yet.

All the contributors have been lacing you daily and I realize it can get overwhelming, but I promise you there is nothing worse than when you realize you should have downloaded something to only find an expired link. I'm debuting my first personal mix for the blog today. I'm not sure how frequent these mixes will be but I promise you when they're posted they'll be carefully sequence and contain some of the highest quality
(CDQ) around. Each mix will contain 11 tracks that I hope will be your soundtrack while you're on the iron horse, on the way home from work or parlayin' at home.

Download, burn or throw 'em into your iPOD but more importantly enjoy them!
