Recap 11/15/09-11/29/09

Rollin' in my 2064

It's Sunday afternoon again (shout out to Lighter Shade Of Brown). It's one of those contemplative days. The new albums from Clipse and Souls Of Mischief leaked and they're just so-so. The landscape of music is just looking bleak as can be and yet you feel serene, cool as can be. What better time to get reacquainted with some retro-future rap, the music that bypassed you or was too ahead of its time to suggest. Check out the best of our offerings from the past half-month:

Shoveling Out The New York Crates: Phase 4 - The T.R.O.Y. Blog straight new yorked you.

Masta Killa (No Said Date) - Chinese Sample - Oh snap, that's where he got it from. How in the fuck ThomasV figured this out is anyone's guess.

A Collection Of Independent Hip Hop - Late 90s had this type of shit on lock.

Vintage Rap-A-Lot (1988-1996) - Not from Houston? You still jock Rap-A-Lot.

dirt_dog Remix Packs 5 & 6 - You haven't heard most of this.

Touring The States: Mesa, AZ - Go figure. Smooth flavor from the Southwest.

Dysfunkshunal Family - Mixed Emotions 96 Demo EP - Yeah, we just heard about it too.

Stay tuned!

Recap 11/01/09 - 11/15/09

Sawed off shotgun, hand on the pump

Artifacts Rhyme Biting Scandal - Because we hate a rhyme biter's rhyme.

In Full Gear, 20 Years Later - Speaking of a crew called Stetsa.

Sounds Like The 90s (Volume 11) - Ever feel like you're living in New Jack City? Bridge the present to the past with the latest installment of our popular series.

Who Flipped It Better? "The Rub" - George and Gwen McRae are given new life by Mobb Deep, Meth and Red, The Coup, and Brand Nubian. But who flipped it loveliest? Listen and decide for yourself.

Philly Retrospective Volume 8 - Listen if only for the fact that The City of Brotherly Love still get overlooked for its immense contributions to hip hop music.

Beef: X-Clan vs. Boogie Down Productions - Their beef was ideological, they kept it on wax and made some great music, and then they reconciled and collaborated. How it should be done.

Touring The States: Tulsa, OK - Markshot continues his quest across the fruited plain, this time proving there's more to Oklahoma than the Trail Of Tears and the Homestead Act.

Southern Series Volume 5 (1991-1997) - It sounds like the 90s ... int he land of Dixie!

Tall Dark & Handsome - Jackson 5 - Recorded 15 B.K. (Before Kanye)

Godfather Don Samples - Volume 1 - Because we're pretty much a Godfather Don blog disguised as a throwback blog, you see....

What's that you say? You heard that we're compiling a list of late 90s gems? Hmmm .... maybe so. Maybe so.

Recap - This Year, Halloween Falls On a Weekend

Mega-trife and we killed you in a past life.

Can't Stop, Won't Stop Compilation - And it don't quit.

Sick Soldiers (Sick Jacken)
- From Psycho Realm to international solo success.

Classic Imaginary EP: Black Sheep
"Non-Fiction" Abridged - The album was better than you remember, if a bit inconsistent. Here it is, trimmed down and ready for your iPod.

dirt_dog remix pack 3 - Some people don't have every song and it's the choice to arrange them together that matters. Try not to forget that.

In Retrospect: Brand Nubian "Everything is Everything" - The Nubians mastered their in-house production style, took on a daring bi-coastal approach to their sound, and ripped every track. So why did you ignore this back in '94?

Rob Base vs. Audio Two - Two high pitched rappers with similar over-enunciated styles, both making fairly overt references to each other's lyrics. Coincidence? Some idiots seem to think so.

Outkast "Elevators" (a home grown remix) - Our forums bubble with creativity.

East Coast 12" Rarities Vol 4&5 - When the East is in the house - oh my gawd!

DJ Revolution - Class of '86 - Regardless of whether or not The Wake Up Show currently appeals to the Scandinavian market, this mix is great.

Example - Impulses EP (Houston 1997) - Because people from Texas other than MC UGK make rap music too, you know.

?uestlove "The Lesson Sample Mix" 2005
- No huge surprises here, but a great mix, especially well suited for playing among your sample-illiterate friends.

Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force - Live @Greek Theatre LA (9.13.09)

DJ Rob One - Gavin Mixtape - R.I.P. to the college radio mixshow legend.

More on the way. We're all cider and campfire these days.

Recap (2nd 1/2 of July)

We wouldn't be here today if our lesser competitors didn't consistently fall the fuck off to their own dismay

It may be the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer, but T.R.O.Y. is churning out the ill shit day after day. Some people have come to know us as the #1 spot for the rarities of known artists. You know, the place to visit if you're missing some De La b-sides or Nas remixes. While that may be true to an extent, we also dig deep into the discographies of our less celebrated rhyming heroes. Check out these posts from the last two weeks alone:

Is there another blog out there covering the golden age this thoroughly? Of course not. Thanks for following, we've got more in store!

A Mid-Summer Night's Recap

You pick the spot and we'll meet in the meadow...

We're on a one-post per day schedule for the whole of July. Don't fret though, we'll be bringing the goods on a daily basis like it was the dead of winter. Here's a little recap of some recent notable posts, just in case you've been spending more time on a hammock than in front of a laptop...

Sounds Like The 90s Volume 7 - C'mon grandpa, get down with this rap thing. The kids think it's groovy.

Bush Babees: Non-Album Tracks - Remember we? Catch up on rare tracks from the Flatbush movement.

De La Soul - The Instrumentals - From D.A.I.S.Y. to Mosaic, the heat minus the plug tunin'.

Wu-Tang Clan Vs. D.I.T.C. - One of the greatest blend mix in recent memory.

Lucien Revolucien - You should know ... about Lucien.

T.R.O.Y. Presents: The Moaning - Clever compilation featuring sultry female vocal samples.

Breakfast With Domino - The Hiero beatsmith talks about production, crew, and making music history.

AZ - A.W.O.L. (Hydra Beats Blends) - AZ can flow, but his beat choice is inconsistent. So Vaporized picked some beats for him. This will stay in the whip 'til at least X-Mas, guaranteed.

And there you have it. If you joined us recently, welcome aboard. To the longtime supporters -we're just getting started.
