Craig Mack - Non LP tracks & remixes

Super props to the homie WhoossainTha49thAmbassado for coming thru with this sick compilation of Mr. Macks work. Craig Mack really got a raw deal. His album dropped the same time Ready To Die did and after "Flava In Ya Ear" not a penny went into his projects, including album and videos. He was dubbed a wannabe Redman and when Diddy realized Biggie was the bank he let Mack sit on the sidelines until his contract ran out. Craig Mack isn't a wannabe Redman, he isn't even 1/4 of Redman but he was a cat who, at times was under-appreciated and there is no denying the fact he had quite a few hits. Peep out the compilation and thanks to Whoosain for collecting the tracks for us. --Philaflava

Touring The States: Omaha, NE

The Basement Society is a collective of emcees whose Hip Hop origin is a direct result of being in "the basement." This crew was a predetermined idea of Omaha emcee, Superior DBX.
After presenting the idea to long time friend and fellow emcee, Jay Money. things started to come together. The crew consisted of DBX (RIP), N-tellect, Jay Money, Kee Lo Z and All Ayz (RIP).

The Basement took the streets by storm after running around challenging anybody who wanted to battle and smashing the competition. They became known for their live performances, which brought them household name status. The Basement's first recording was a song called "Its Over" on 1993's "Parental Advisory" (the first local project release), on which they dissed the Young Rebels, another prominant Omaha crew. After beefin' with the Young Rebels (and a few other crews), Basement Society released their debut ep "Who Downstairs?" in April of 1994, which started out on a successful path. "Who Downstairs?" was probably the most popular project released under the watchful eye of DJ Suicide, at that time, selling all copies out of the store (no hand to hand sales), relying on heavy street promotions and the impact of the live shows to sell the units.

A recording contract was being discussed with Ichiban Records back in 1995, but interference from a long time associate of Jay Money and DJ Suicide killed all negotiations. Toward the end of 1995, Basement Society returned to the studio and recorded 3 new songs for a maxi-single called "Raw Power Move." But, due to conflicts within the crew, it was never released. The Basement never broke up, but certain members went their seperate ways. In 2000, all 5 of the Basement members appeared on stage together, impromptu, of course, at the Black Sheep/Das Efx concert in Lincoln, NE. This appearance alone outshined the opening act.

Nas & Ghostface “WR1 Remixes”

So this year I decided I was finally going to put a small dent in recording some of my vinyl. Some for the blog (see the Othorized F.A.M. & Cappadonna rips), others just for me. I should probably be saving this one for the next volume of Illegal Remixes with Step One, but I couldn't wait. I must have bought this one in 98 or 99 from HipHopSite or Sandbox. The labels were white with no writing, no nothing (I made these "fake" labels) and the only info was the etching in the runout said WR1. Sorry about any crackles and pops, I did everything I could to clean it up. If you have any info on this white label, please let me know.

Nas and Madlib “Naslib” (2007)

Here's a nice little 38 minute mix of Nas accapellas over Madlib beats done by DJ Serv1. The only place you could get this was with issue #30 of Stop Smiling magazine in 2007. It looks like you can still order the back issue (issues? there were 2 different covers) and get the cd for a couple extra bucks. No track list included, but you'll recognize everything.

Murder Dog Presents: Pirhana Killer Fish 5823 & Ride Or Die 5810

Murder Dog is, quite simply, one of the best hip hop publications ever to hit newsstands. Though not as hilariously demented as ego trip or as comprehensive as The Source during it's Golden Age, every single issue is saturated with a wealth of artist interviews and articles. Black Dog Bone and the Murder Dog team have had their collective fingers to the pulse of underground rap music for a decade and a half and have managed to consistently put out a magazine that is almost completely devoid of industry politricks. Also, where else could you find side-by-side interviews with UGK, Haji Springer, and Danny Trejo along with a ten-page spread on the Sri Lankan hip hop scene?

Along with their interviews, scene coverage, and producer biopsies Murder Dog has also been dedicated to bringing the underground to light through extremely comprehensive regional compilations. The two I bring to you today were actually packaged with early issues of Murder Dog, and are entitled "5823 Pirhana Killer Fish" and "5810 Ride Or Die." They are ridiculously rare in physical form, and as such command top dollar from caked-up rap nerds that have no problem blowing $200 on an out-of-print cd.

Although I wouldn't spend that much cash, the music contained within is indeed top-quality. Low budget environments striving for perfection, naw'mean? Real underground 4-track, recorded-in-a-washing-room sounding records. If you like the obscure regional compilations that schenectadyfan brings us on the reg, you will love these discs. True to first-generation Murder Dog, they have a exclusive focus on the southern and west-coast scene, with raps from Al Kapone, the Botany Boys, and Kool Daddy Fresh, and lesser known talents such as the Funxsouljaz. There's even an old Mac Dre song on "5810 Ride Or Die." These definitely get the EL stamp-of-approval

Grab these compilations while they're hot; I guarantee they won't disappoint.

Apache - R.I.P. Jan.22.10

Paying my tribute to one of the original Flavor Unit crew member, Apache, I compiled all of his appearances on records from 1989 to 1993 and the 12" cuts from his 1993 solo album "Apache Ain't Shit". In 1993, for his 12"s cuts, he receives production from A Tribe Called Quest(Q. Tip), Large Professor, and The 45 King. For his guest appearances in 1993, he's with Fat Joe & Kool G Rap, and 2Pac(R.I.P), Treach, & The Live Squad(Stretch R.I.P). He would also write some of Latifah's lyrics. R.I.P. Apache

Flavor Unit emcee Apache, born Anthony Teaks, passed away after a protracted illness. Shakim Compere, CEO and Co-Founder of Flavor Unit Records, remembered Apache, “Without Apache there would have been no Queen Latifah, no Naughty By Nature, no Chill Rob G., no anything” Compere told AllHipHop.com. “Apache was the string that tied all of Flavor Unit together. Without Apache none of this would be.”

If I am not mistaken, Papa Chuk was from North Carolina originally and later moved to Texas. I am not sure where he recorded. If anyone out there can shed some light on his work I'd love to know. Who Flipped It Better? More Moaning Samples

This time around we're looking at The Five Stairsteps soul 45, "Danger, She's A Stranger."
After the nice 12 second bass intro, is a pretty addictive moaning/singing type sample.
Then, some dope horns drop in the mix, then flutes.
This is a pretty great soul 45 to pick up, if you see it.

Five Stairsteps - Danger, She's A Stranger

And now for a bunch of tracks that flip it, chop it, and interpret it in their own way.
Surprisingly to me, Everlast's song makes the most out of the samples, but Blackstract has
probably my favorite song on this list with "I Stole Your Girl". Strangely, for a crew that only
released 3 records, they use the same sample again on "Diary Of A Mad MC", which is nowhere
near the caliber of their other selection, to me.
The most known joint here is nice, too, Two Dope Boyz (In Cadillacs), but probably the most
basic.

Blackstract - I Stole Your Girl

Everlast - On The Edge

Outkast - Two Dope Boyz (In A Cadillac)

Wu-Syndicate - Golden Sands

The Candy Store - Escape From Belize

Cooly Live - All Possibilities

Cookie Crew - Fade To Black

Blackstract - Diary Of A Mad MC

Give each track a listen and list your favorites in the comments. Feel free to explain your choice or not.

The Source: May 1992 issue featuring X-Clan

Whoa, could this ever happen today? A ‘radical’ pro-Black musical group on the cover of a mainstream magazine? This issue was obviously popular back in ’92 because someone stole it from my dorm room. I had to purchase another copy from EBay last spring to post this but once again, I never got around to it until now. So this issue is a T.R.O.Y. blog exclusive. After re-reading it, I can see that it was probably stolen because of the Das Efx and Pete Rock & CL Smooth album reviews. If you weren’t aware, those groups were on fire in ’92 and the radio kept “They Want Efx” and “They Reminisce Over You” on constant rotation. Looking back, did both of their albums deserve 4 mics, though? I also forgot that this issue had a small article discussing the death of Kid Hood from Tribe's “Scenario” remix. I remember being pretty upset after first reading that back then. One verse and his career was over. If only that could have happened to Lil Wayne instead…
