Here's a dope release from 1996 that features Greg Nice of Nice & Smooth. Produced by Babegezus(I don't know who this is), Greg Nice rhymes alongside with two other emcees. The remix produced by Da Penguin(I don't know who that is either), is definitely better than the Babigezus mix. It's a Greg Nice anthem type of ish.

Here is Freddie Foxxx's 12" release from 1994 for then-unreleased album Crazy Like A Foxxx. So Tough was released with three different mixes. The original was produced by S.I.D.(Naughty, Apache, Queen Latifah) and had a reggae vibe to it with Queen Latifah singing on the hook. Then you had the "Tough" version produced Easy Mo Bee which made it feel more rugged. The last mix & the best was remixed by S.I.D. . It gave it a more mellow sound and took away the singing by Queen Latifah. It was more radio-friendly. The last track "Crazy Like A Foxxx" is known for being a diss to Ultragmagnetic MC's.

Here's a 1996 release by Rob-O of INI. As you can see on the picture, it says "Produced By Pete Rock" but it was actually produced by the Soul Brother's bro Grap Luva. It has the same type of vibe as any song from the "Center of Attention". Wunderlust would also be included on Rob-O's Rhyme Pro cd which featured all his old materials.

This next 1997 release comes from the Derelect Camp. Move It In Move It Out is produced by Rockwilder(Redman, Busta Rhymes) when he had just started to get a little hype. But I got to say that Phat Remix wins, even though it is remixed by an unknown producer.

Nobodies - Fables (North Carolina 1997)

In 1997, I inexplicably dropped out of hip hop for awhile. Not that I stopped listening to hip hop, but I was branching out. No excuses! 1997 was a year for much classic hip hop and this is really solid too. It's a dope east coast album I came across recently. Top tracks on this would have to be Hands To The Sky and Greatest MC's in my humble opinion. Found this review recently and I thought it was pretty fair. Will share it here:

" The Nobodies are a North Carolina duo consisting of MC's Equinox and Apocalypse... this is DIY rap for those hungry to hear cats making music THEY actually would want to hear rather than what could get them a big record deal. The beats here are gritty and feature a nice use of samples from Nas, Mobb Deep, KRS and more laced throughout to give it a classic feel. Only one R & B chorus shows up on the album but even it's forgivable due to the strong balance of lyrical content. As far as the actual rhyming goes, Apocalypse and Equinox are both well above average MC's with distinct voices and delivieries(plus a guest spot by Esau on track 2... CHECK HIS ALBUM, you'll thank me later!) and spit on a few different topics but mostly about how underappreciated they are and how hard it is to make it (basically being "nobodies" in the world of rap). This is one of those albums that you like to pop in once in awhile but it never leaves any real distinct impression on you... it's just good solid beats and rhymes(and that's all you can ask for sometimes). They followed this up with an even better album called "Now Culture" in 2003 but haven't been seen anywhere except on a milk carton since? Fingers crossed for something new in the future. "

Recently, one of our more prolific T.R.O.Y. posters, Markshot, blessed us all with pretty much every ill single Ras Kass dropped in the nineties. Well, he actually uploaded them all a few months ago but the links died out. Of course, upon request, he re-upped them with the quick fast. Nothing more to really say about this except dig in while the diggin's good! Ras Kass was making undeniably exceptional music at that point in time. DJ Mark The 45 King - Put The Funk Out There LP

DJ Mark The 45 King is one of the more celebrated producers at the T.R.O.Y. Forum and throughout the blogosphere; his production credits, break beat compilations, and mixtapes are the stuff of legend. Forum regular and occasional contributor to out blog Jaz (of CDRS fame) was kind enough to bless us with this treat. Apparently this is an LP entirely produced by 45 King, which Jaz says is a "promo that was manufactured by Def Jam Records, Inc., and marketed by Roc-A-Fella Records L.L.C./ Def Jam Records." Ho1ogramz noted that the existence of this LP was mentioned during Unkut's interview with 45 King:

Robbie: I got this bootleg a while ago - the Put The Funk Out There album. What was the story behind that?

The 45 King: I have my ideas who put that out, but I had nothing to do with that. It’s funny that people like to bootleg me but they don’t wanna put the record out. So I dunno how that goes.

Robbie: Was that actually how you planned the album or was that just a collection of tracks that someone just put together?

The 45 King: Considering what the tracks were, that’s why I have a feeling who did it. It was an album that was supposed to come out that never came out.

Two legendary Bronx emcees face to face in front of the hip hop landmark Patterson Projects.

Lord Finesse and Percee P get at each other over a loop of "Funky Drummer" on this evening 

some time in the summer of 1989. Besides having to face such lyrically aggressive opponents

on the rhyme tip, they also had to battle over the irksome sounds of a Mr. Softee ice cream truck

jingle and a gaggle of loud mouth crumb snatchers. Regardless, both emcees deliver incredible 

performances and both deserve praise for the classic verses they dropped.

Definitely 20 unforgettable minutes in our culture's history.

Soul Kid Klik

Soul Kid Klik, a hip-hop crew based in the Bronx, was formed in the early 90's. The members are G-Clef, Infamous, Blakspik, Goodfella Mike G, Storm the Ghetto Mutant, Malik Kahaar Ali, Skinslaya and DJ Spinbad. It all got started when original member G-Clef released an album with his group Ghetto Philharmonic (G-Clef, DJ Spinbad, B-Natural) in 1994. The album released by Tuff City was supposed to come out in 1993 but only came out late in 1994. After problems with Tuff City, Ghetto Philharmonic left the label. After G-Clef became managed by what was then known as GZA Entertainment, which was co-owned by GZA from the Wu-Tang Clan. G-Clef then started to promote his crew Soul Kid Klik. Their first 12" release was "Mortal Kombat" which came out in 1995. It became a minor hit and got spun on underground radio shows. They would release one more 12" single but after problems with GZA, Jay "Wax" Garfield, and even the group, they would eventually disband and abort their album. Only SKK member, Goodfella Mike G, was able to release a solo album in 1996 before the breakup. It's a dark, and raw album that was done by a "real" Sicilian mafioso. In 2002, G-Clef was able re-release all the SKK tracks(demos, unreleased, 12") into one CD. In my opinion, it's an underground classic! Just hardcore, raw, and real!

In Search Of A Complete Prince Paul Discography

The regulars at the T.R.O.Y. Forum are not your average message board denizens, no sir. Far from leeching lurkers, our regulars are expert compilers, DJs, bloggers, producers, etc. in their own right and tend to display the drive to get things done efficiently and collaboratively. One big rap nerd Voltron perhaps, but the T.R.O.Y. Movement gets things done, duns.

In recent weeks the hilariously named Wordbooty announced a plan to compile the entirety of Prince Paul's discography, going so far as to include extremely remixes and other obscure production and scratching credits. Wordbooty posted quite a few of his finds to demonstrate that he had been making progress, starting with remixes. Unfortunately, the great Zshare Outage of '08 left many of the files inaccessible. The T.R.O.Y. Forum's first lady Ho1Ogramz came to the rescue, and uploaded all of the files that have been amassed thus far.

As you can see, Prince Paul has produced for a very diverse set of artists, which makes sense given his eclectic and even eccentric tastes as a sampling genius.

Cold Chillin' on Christmas

First I would like to say Merry Christmas to all T.R.O.Y. Blog readers!

Now here's a rare posse cut by the Juice Crew that was released in 1988. As Cold Chillin' was distributed by Warner Bros. Records, they were given a spot on Warner Bros' Christmas Compilation "Winter Warnerland". The record featured Big Daddy Kane, Roxanne Shante, MC Shan, & Fly Ty(yes, Fly Ty). Kane drops two verses while Shante, Shan, & Ty only rhymed once. Funny thing about this record is that everybody from "The Symphony" is missing except for Kane. It's still a great track though!

Jingle Jangle: Rock The Sleigh Bells

Nah this ain't a post about The Legion featuring Dres, duns. This is yet another homegrown T.R.O.Y. Forum treat, this time with a holiday twist, courtesy of Hullabaloo:

Sick of your 9-5's holiday carols? Try the Slayed Bells mix. I went through my library listening for that telltale jingle jangle to give you the perfect stocking stuffer and me a crazy migraine.

The sleigh bells have had a torrid history in hip hop production. Golden Age producers like Pete Rock, Buckwild, and Large Professor built careers off the sample, imbuing their beats with a soulful, whimsical, swinging groove, that often enticed some of the best performances out of an emcee's career. Sleigh bells can be the focal point of your track (Eric B and Rakim - Microphone Fiend), relied on as a hi-hat stand-in (Big L - 8 iz Enuff), or lurk subtly deep within the mix (Lord Finesse - Flip da Style).

Picking tracks for Slayed Bells has changed the way I hear my music. I am now conscious of the sleigh bell presence on songs I had heard hundreds of times before. I now notice how Large Professor uses three different samples on Nas' Halftime. I now consider it a travesty when producers opt for a tambourine, xylophone, slide whistle, or salt shaker instead. I am now acutely aware of songs that SHOULD have had some bells in the background. Close your eyes and imagine the jingling on Big Daddy Kane's Aint No Half-Stepping, Large Pro's Ijuswannachill, or Jeru's Me or the Papes. Yes, infinitely better. Yet the sleigh bell seems to be losing favor with today's top beatmakers. While famed producer Bruce Dickinson recognized the need for more cowbell back in 1976, today our collective eardrums just can't get enough of Crank That's steel pan loop that spent seven weeks at number one. Would we still be watching the young maestro supermaning hoes if he'd thrown down some sleigh bells under his hi-hats? You're damn right.

This mix focuses on classic material to illustrate how sleigh bells have been championed by some of our all time favorites. As the cabbie from the original Die Hard says to a crusty John McClane; "This IS Christmas Music!"

Born Lolita Shante Gooden, Roxanne Shante was part of a phenomenon that took place in 1984. UTFO's song "Roxanne Roxanne" was a huge hit that year about their attempts to seduce a woman named Roxanne. One night Shante overheard WHBI's Tyrone Williams, Mister Magic, and Marley Marl discussing the fact that UTFO has skipped out on promised appearance. Shante offered to record a dis record. Her skills seemed up to par despite only being around 14-15 years old. Marley produced and she rapped the song, "Roxanne's Revenge" and it made them both famous. In fact, Shante couldn't go to school because so many people would stand outside of her classroom. Following her success there were over one hundred more "Roxanne" answer records. She began to tour constantly, freestyling her way through all takers. He war with UTFO continued as she would do anything to sabotage their shows and make them look bad. She had a few other hits (written by Big Daddy Kane) like "Have a Nice Day" and also "Go on Girl" from the movie Colors. She also did a duet with Biz Markie in 1986 called "Def Fresh Crew". She also worked with Rick James on a "Loosey's Rap." Other tracks of note were "Payback" and "Freestyle" in 1987. 1990 saw the release of "Big Mama" which took on every other female rapper in the game.

He runs his own blog called Ain't It Good To You and has made a name for himself making compilations of obscure or underappreciated songs from artists such as Positive K and The Audio Two. Omar Epps' Wolfpack

Omar Epps may have got his first start as "Q" in the movie Juice and some of you may best know him as Dr. Eric Foreman in the medical drama House , but before Hollywood started knocking Omar Epps was struggling Brooklyn rapper who was apart of the group Wolfpack along with his brother.

Wolfpack never dropped an album but they did release a single titled "Definition" in 1995 once Omar had a little money and some clout. I remember the video used to play like crazy on YO! but it was impossible to find the single in stores. For those who never got a chance to peep, now is your chance!

You're not going to find any Jim Morrison or Jose Feliciano on here as we're going a little more obscure with this compilation. However, you will find some Stevie, Tammi Lynn, and Al Green. Not to mention, plenty of samples and a drum break here and there if your into that sort of thing. Some versions are on some smooth ish, while some are psychedelic and others are just plain old funk bangers. The Johnny Harris version is pretty much an instrumental of the Shirley Bassey one, though there are differences they're both pretty ill.

The variety of styles and players on this comp make it enjoyable like you're really not listening to the same song 30 times.

Big Daddy Kane Mixed by J.Period

In my opinion, this is one of the greatest mixtapes ever! Released in 2003, "The Best of Big Daddy Kane" was mixed by J.Period & hosted by the man himself, Big Daddy Kane. It featured classics like Ain't No Half Steppin', Warm It Up , Taste of Chocolate, etc. Then you have a few blends using classic beats alongside with the dope rhymes of Kane. You also get freestyles, rare remixes, guest appearances, Kane telling stories, etc... I suggest that you burn a copy for you car right now!
