My Tapes by Basta aka KYOZAI Pt. 5

You might know Basta (aka Kyozai) as being the owner of the rare cassette blog, Music-Thingz. Recently, he blessed us with a nice portion of his tape collection at philaflava T.R.O.Y. forum.

Here at The T.R.O.Y. blog, we wanted to give these tapes their deserved shine and Basta the proper recognition he's earned, to the people outside of the philaflava forum.

I will split his tapes in several posts, giving you enough time to digest this massive work.

There will be no previews, but c'mon, the hilariously awesome covers alone warrant a download.

Enjoy!

Babbletron - Mechanical Royalty

Babbletron is a group from New York, consisting of three members, Cool Calm Pete, Jaymanila and DJ Pre.

I don't know exactly if this is their first official album, cause i've seen they released a vinyl named Ramblers Anonymous in 2002, but there is full length album circulating over the internet, named Ramble At A Discount, so i don't know what's the real story behind that, is it official release or not.

Production was handled by DJ Pre, except three tracks, #3 (RJD2), #6 (DOOM) & #7 (Ese).

Rare NYC Underground 1990-1996

Here's a dope little selection of rare hip hop out of New York City. Hook needs no introduction. If you missed his album, dont sleep.

'Sicks weeks' is one of the strongest cuts from 'Hip Hop 101' and starts us off right. Second period is taught by the Sin Assasinz. This lesson comes from their full length album. Fellow contributor ThomasV brought us some of their earlier material awhile back.

The rest of this compilation is off the beaten path so I hope y'all check it out! Seems like the Abadaba single from 1995 is a little better known than his older stuff, but I'd go with his 1992 release any day.

Download

1 (4:42) hook - sicks weeks 1996
2 (3:23) sin assasinz - i don't care 1996
3 (4:48) asphalt poetry - harmagedion 1993
4 (4:38) i-power - test da spirit (remix) 1994
5 (5:15) azie - gangster shit (remix) 1990
6 (5:02) abadaba & the sonz of harlem - tha muthafuckin' great one 1992
7 (2:22) talaam - total hegemony 1992
8 (3:55) the pope - to tha rescue 1992
9 (5:42) cdld - i'm the man 1993

If you download this and like what you hear leave some comments. Dig in, let me know what ya think!

Hook - Hip Hop 101 (New York 1996)

Recently on the forum we've been having a discussion about under-rated albums from the TROY era. There have been lots of honorable mentions, some well deserved recognition, and some strikes. So far nobody has mentioned Hook. His album is such a dopefest it's unbelievable. Beginning to end, 'Hip Hop 101' bangs. I've included a few cuts on compilations here and there, but today I am bringing you the full album. It's an unsung classic and I think after listening to it you'll be asking the same questions. Why was he so below the radar ? How did such a brilliant album make such a small splash ? Holy shit, it just doesn't make sense. Freshmen and seniors alike, stay seated for the whole class. 'Hip Hop 101' will will teach ya a thing or two.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=A018EAHW

01 (0:41) hook - intro
02 (3:45) hook - where i'm comin' from

05 (0:44) hook - no sellout
06 (4:03) hook - 95% biz
07 (3:45) hook - where ya at ? (featuring stephan alucard)

Various Artists - On The Down Low (New York 1995)

This is a very dope cd I picked up awhile ago called 'On The Down Low'. It was recorded at House Of Hits, which I think is in New York. It was put out in 1995. All of the artists are from New York to my knowledge. A few of them I know other tracks from like Pretty Tone Capone and Preacher Earl. Pretty Tone Capone had some earlier releases too that are worth finding if you are not familiar with him.

The 1st is Case Dismissed / Kidnapped (1992)
The 2nd is Across 110th St. / Sexy / Marked 4 Death (1993)

Anyway, back to this particular release. I know our readers are fans of that timeless mid 90's boom bap and this cd is an unrecognized gem. What an amazing score for less than 3 dollars. In terms of content and temperament, I could probably compare the music here to the early lyricist lounge tapes from 1992-1997. I'm a sucker for these sorts of compilations and 'On The Down Low' hits like a champ. There are 2 r&b tracks on here, numbers 4 and 8. Given the strength of the other 10 selections, a couple of r&b tracks are excusable foul balls.

Here's the link and the tracklist --

01 (04:43) five & five - keys & g's
02 (04:26) big ds - keep it ill
03 (03:50) t-r-y-a-d-z - tryadz
04 (04:15) brown sugar - dreamin'
05 (05:32) xtra pleza - warpath
06 (03:37) kay superior - focus
07 (04:00) pretty tone capone - g-spot
08 (05:07) maurice - let me fix you
09 (04:21) gorilla l - on & on
10 (03:02) preacher earl & the ministry - 14 floors to the lobby
11 (04:30) phorced n' tre - the newcomer
12 (05:13) dem nigs - many styles

Download

Mixed by Evah Gorman, Norman Bullard, Kenny Ferracho, Sack Entertainment, Hitmen Productions, The Phathedz, Larue Cheatham, Soundwave Productions, and Ron Bowen.

I dont think many of these tracks appear anywhere else. Hit me up with some comments if you like this cd and I'll work hard to post more in the same vein.

Shoveling Out The New York Crates

The rules for these two compilations were simple. EP material only, from 1994-1996. All New York material as far as I know. Some of this stuff is rare as hell so take note. It's hard to pick the tracks I like most on these cause they are all slammin, beginning to end. I ruminated on them for awhile, so I think these will probably have 'mass appeal'. You be the judge.
