Sounds Like The 90s Vol. 13 (2010)

Nope, you're reading the title right. If I'm being completely honest here, the real reason for the delay was I was just waiting on some good music in 2010. Being that most of the tracks I select for compilations are current I didn't just want to throw something together and label it SLT9s.

For the past two years I've taken ample time in creating this series. In selecting the right tracks, to sequencing them, to finding the best quality mp3s available. I still don't know if there has been an abundance of dope music in '10, but there is there plenty of time left. We're always open to suggestions so continue to leave comments or shoot us an email with the goodness.

Peace to my T.R.O.Y. fam for helping me gather some of these joints. Special shouts go to to Strategy, Blake Reznik, Meyhem Lauren, Ide, Skavenger,Verge, Open Mike Eagle and Dirt Dog for the ill cover. Enjoy Volume 13 and stay tuned for plenty more to come in 2010. --Philaflava

Sounds Like The 90s (Best Of) Vol. 12

I can't believe it but this marks the 12th edition of Sounds Like The 90s. Instead of bringing you new music this month we're bringing you a recap of sorts. Below is a double disc compiled of the best of Sounds Like The 90s throughout this year. And to close things out it was only right we brought back Blake and Tal for the artwork.

Many of you will remember the De La Buhloone Mindstate ad featured in various Hip-hop mags in '93. The image below is actually the real ad taken from URB when it was still a Cali-only free newspaper. The image was scanned straight from the paper and left in its current condition. Its not Sounds Like The 90s, this shit IS from the 90s.

So here is to another month of music and a nice way to close out 2009. A special thanks goes out to all the artists who have contributed, graphic designers and of course you for supporting. We'll be continuing the SLT9s series in 2010 but for now enjoy this double fix. --Philaflava

One Year Bitches

So we've been building this blog for a year now. Our first post was on 9/30/08. At the time, we figured we would mostly cover the material people were posting in our forums. We soon realized that we had diverse content to share by the truckloads, and we expanded into exclusive interviews, homegrown remixes, analytical essays, guest blogging spots, and more.

As we grew in popularity, we attracted praise and denunciation from every walk of online hip hop life. Folks as far away as Indonesia praised us for dropping gems they would have otherwise never heard and for contributing greater insight than the average upload blog. Meanwhile, some people felt we didn't give enough credit where it was due or simply that we were funk faking human shade trees. No matter your opinion, we definitely garnered your attention: in only one year, 1,000+ heads subscribe to our RSS feed and many more follow us through other means.

To celebrate a year in the game, we have compiled our most noteworthy links and organized them by category. We urge you to give old posts a new chance. If you're a vinyl fiend who never found a Now Born Click b-side demo he didn't like, check out one of the sample compilations for a change. If you're a technical production head who dreams about MPC pads, read one of the lyric analyses. There's room for it all as we mingle at the ball. And there's more in store. Reply to the thread to offer congrats, or hate on us if you're so inclined. Constructive criticism and requests for something different in the future are also welcome. Whatever you do, just stay tuned...

Track Breakdown:

Wu-Tang Clan - Radiant Jewels feat. Raekwon, Cormega & Sean Price
One of the best cut & paste collabos you'll hear all year. Cormega rips the track to shreads.

Mos Def - Auditiorium feat. Slick Rick
Mos Def + Madlib + Slick Rick = winner!

Kurious - Sittin' In My Car
I'll all about sequencing and this is some quintessential 90's hip-hop.

DJ JS-1 - Ridiculous feat. O.C. & Pharoahe Monch
No Metal Thangz, but pretty damn good. Check out J's site.

Blaq Poet - Rap Addiction feat. Shabeeno of NYGz & Lil Fame
Another banger courtesy of Premier. Nostalgia rap shit right here!

Grand Puba - Same Old Drama feat. Large Professor
Short and sweet but when two vets go line-4-line you take it.

General Steele - Riot feat. Sean Price, Illa Noyz & UG
Sean P always does damage and Steele shines as well but I put this on here so you could hear the return of Cella Dwella's UG.

Marco Polo & Torae - Smoke feat. Lil Fame & Rock
Don't sleep on that MP & Torae album. This is another reason to cop!

Blaq Poet - Voices
Another Blaq Poet track but given the subject matter I thought it was relevant for the mix.

DJ JS-1 - Orginal G'z feat. A.G., Craig G. & Edo G
I'm an A.G. fan so when he comes correct, best believe I'm listening. One of the better tracks off the new JS-1 LP.

Funkdoobiest - The Heavyweight FunkIt's as if they never left us.

You got $45 to drop on their new album? Go here.

Lushlife - Another Word For Paradise feat. Camp Lo
It's nice to hear the old Camp Lo again. For more info about Lushlife click here.

Drake - Think Good Thoughts feat. Phonte & Elzhi
Canada's new "It" boy who is spits over the 9th Wonder track along side with Phonte and the ever-dope Elzhi.

Mos Def - Life In Marvelous Times
Anyone else think Mos is back? I'm leaning towards YES!

Godamus Rhyme - Stress '09

This month Godamus tackles the OK classic. If you've missed the previous Godamus Rhyme tracks click here.

Tame One - Suede Adidas

Proof that Tame can still black-out when he wants to.

Michael Jackson - This Time Around feat. Notorious B.I.G. (Bonus Track)
I didn't feel right making this compilation and not paying tribute to MJ.

Collect and download the previous 6 volumes here.

Super props to Kalel for always providing the dope covers and Strategy for completing the Sounds Like The 90's series.

Sounds Like The 90's (Volume 6)

I'mma try and keep this shorter than usual since I just got back from my trip. The people wanted it so you are finally getting it-TAGS!

That's right, moving forward all SLT9's will be mp3 player friendly containing the proper tags and artwork. Volume 6 definitely has a more rugged feel than the previous efforts. The first half showcases what NY's been doing for the better part of the year with the new Smif N Wessun featuring the Smith Bros.

Then we give you a taste of the new Marco Polo/Torae album Double Barrel, which I suggest you clicking on that link to preview because you just might be finding yourself at Best Buy later picking it up. I haven't finished the whole album but based off what was leaked it was reason enough for me to cop it over the weekend (@ Fat Beats too)!

Former ONYX member Sonny Seez is back with a new 28-track album and our sister blog Steady Bloggin' were kind enough to provide 8 tracks for you to check out. I felt
"Romp" was the best of the bunch and belonged on Volume 6. DJ Premier laced Blaq Poet with another joint and then we give you the latest by Chubb Rock and Wordsmith. I know the artwork reads Wordsworth and it would make sense for them to collaborate since they've done it before (Prince Paul) but this is Wordsmith. It's my fault because I told the graphic dude (Kalel) the wrong thing.

Since Pete Rock and C.L. can't put aside their differences we're putting their newest tracks back-2-back on letting you decide who needs who more. Next up we got
Superstar Quamallah making his 4th consecutive appearance with "Bass Murder" featuring Defari Heru. Don't forget to cop Quam's new album Invisible Man.

Making another consecutive appearance is the homie Godamus Rhyme with another leaked track from the T.R.O.Y. project "Classically Trained." This time God tackles The Pharcyde classic and goes 3-3 with his remakes. And since I was in such a Pharcyde kinda mood, I thought it only made sense to throw on the recently remixed O.G. version by DJ Jazzy Jeff and close out the with Jean Grae's tribute to Biggie.

Finally we have some newer tracks by
Tha Connection, Tanya Morgan and '09's version of "A Milli" by Nathaniel Wilson. I did add a bonus track since it doesn't really go with the theme but the subject matter definitely fits. Galvatron78 allows all of us Nintendo nerds to reminisce with his track "Playin Nintendo." You can find more Galvatron78 tracks by clicking here.

Well that's it from me. Hope you all enjoy the new volume and keep sending us those tracks! --Philaflava

Sounds Like The 90s Volume 5 (REUPPED)

editor's note: this post is back. we'll be here forever and ever. and ever and ever.

B
etter late than never, right? A few of you finally caught on but not up with our Sounds Like The 90's mixtapes so definitely check 'em all out and get acquainted while supplies last.

Volume 5 starts off with the first of 5 exclusives ONLY found here on T.R.O.Y. with the newest Kurious Jorge single "Benneton” featuring MC Serch & MF Doom. We debuted the video a few weeks back on Steady Bloggin' but nobody has the full mp3 version featuring the DOOM verse until now! Be on the look out for K-Jorge's new album II dropping sooner than you think on Amalgam Digital.

Making his third consecutive appearance on
Sounds Like The 90's is Superstar Quamallah
and after you listen to "
You Need Knowledge" you'll understand just why. I've had the pleasure of checking out the new album Invisible Man and for all those in need of that 90's sound, look no further come May 19th when it officially drops.

DJ Jazzy Jeff recently dropped a compilation of all his favs and this one just stood out so I felt despite it being record in the 90's this is an exception because Jeff did something exceptional to the Biggie classic.

The next few tracks are fairly new and have appeared on other blogs that focus on current music, but for those who don't keep tabs daily, I thought I'd throw on the ones that best capture the vibe we go for on
Sounds Like The 90's. Is anyone really upset at hearing new Camp Lo-Wah? Didn't think so.

Over the past few months I've been asked how come I haven't shown enough
Philly love on these, so this time I brought the homie Reef The Lost Cauze along and another T.R.O.Y. exclusive by one of the most slept-on Philly lyricists, Maylay Sparks (aka Rahsheed). It made sense since both Maylay and L.G. are fam that we repped them on volume 5. For those who aren't hip to what L.G. has done get hip by clicking on this.

On volume 4 we dropped
"Heat" by Finale but after we got our hands one the NES-sounding "One Man Show (Remix)" featuring Casual we just knew it was a perfect fit. Check out your future top 5 album of the year "A Pipe Dream And A Promise" at a store nearest store.

Many of us ask, myself included, what's up with
Breezly Brewin? For years we've all been waiting for him to drop that solo. I remember back in '96 when Clear Blue Skies dropped and then skip to '02 how I was in Fat Beats actually picking up the re-release on wax and none other than Breezly Brewin himself was workin' the register. I just couldn't understand it. Certainly a guy with that much talent shouldn't be behind any register let alone one at Fat Beats. Let's all hope 2009 is his year because many of us are still pulling for the homie.

That said enjoy two guest features by
Brewin, one of which is the new single by Tame One featuring Aesop Rock and the production of Parallel Thought. The debuted on Steady Bloggin' as well as others back in April, but this is the mastered track from Acid Tab Vocab dropping June 23rd on Amalgam Digital.

Godamus Rhyme is a name you soon will know. If you're a regular on Philaflava than you already know him, but for the rest of the blogosphere it's only a matter of time. Later this summer we'll be debuting a T.R.O.Y. collabo with him titled "Classically Trained." The T.R.O.Y. staff threw out some of our 90's favorites for Godamus to tackle and if "One Love 2009" is any indication of how the outcome will be, I'm pretty sure everyone will be ecstatic. If you wanna check out Godamus take on The Beatnuts' "Let Off A Couple" then click here.

Closing things out we got a few new tracks by
Damu The Fudgemunk, Tanya Morgan and the latest off of the new Raekwon mixtape Blood on the Chef’s Apron.

Don't forget about
Philaflava radio where you can stream many of the tracks you find on this site and Steady Bloggin 24/7 for your surfing pleasures. Peace --Philaflava
