Solar (Yoko Ono) kills Gang Starr

Let's all call a spade a spade. No more sugar coating shit and no more politically correctness. Since Solar has been involved in Guru's career not only has Guru slipped into obscurity but now into a coma. Before you dare come to his defense once again check out the video below. Just read a few press releases he's (Solar) given over the past week.

I'm sure we'll get some emails from his publicist and a few trolls defending him in the comment section but everyone we've ever spoken to that has MEANT something to Hip-hop, some of the most respected rappers and producers today seem to share the same opinion--Solar ruined Guru. Now I don't know what bet Guru lost or how much he is in debt to Solar, but clearly Solar has an agenda and way more control over Guru, his music and health than any business partner (or person) ever should.

Nobody can say Guru has made better music with Solar. Nobody can say Guru has been a better person with Solar. Not one person, friend or family will say Guru has been a happier person with Solar.

I'm not out to assassinate Solar and or career, but without Guru not a single person would have even known or cared who he was. We're not talking about MC Solar from France here. I've spoken with some of the greatest industry figures today and they all say the same thing, Solar is an opportunist who has Guru under a spell. Publicists hate him. Fans of Gang Starr weep and now Guru's own family is ex-communicated. Enough is enough.

I pray Guru pulls through, but I also pray this puts an end to all the ridiculous beef between Mr. Elam and Mr. Martin. If one good thing comes out of this besides, it's that we'll we finally see what WE ALL want to, Gang Starr reuniting.

And before you get it twisted there has been NO other blog with the exception of Preems that has showed love and support to both Guru and DJ Premier.

Check out our interview with Guru and Solar from from last year.

Sincerely,

Every hip-hop fan in the world

(AllHipHop News)
Revered rapper Guru released a statement to AllHipHop.com today (March 3) as he recovers from surgery after suffering a heart attack over the weekend.

Guru, born Keith Elam, was briefly comatose due to the heart attack. Doctors successfully operated on the 43-year-old MC on Tuesday (March 2).

"I am doing fine and I am recovering! I'm weak though,” Guru told AllHipHop.com in a statement today. “Solar is the only person who has the accurate info on my situation. Any info from anybody else is false! I appreciate your well wishes and all the love!"

Guru and his family are asking for privacy as he recovers and stressed for fans to continue to send prayers, thoughts and love.

His partner Solar echoed Guru’s comments about the need for privacy but told fans the outlook is positive for the rapper.

Additionally, only Solar will have access to Guru and accurate information regarding the status of his health.

"Guru is resting and doing well after his surgery,” Solar told AllHipHop.com. “The doctors say that he will fully recover from his illness. We thank everyone who send prayers our way and we appreciate the outpouring of love from around the world!”

Solar can be reached by contacting a representative for his publicity firm, Yo-Pr.com.

  1. That is a massively fucked up situation!

To my shame, I don't know who Solar is but if he has that sort of control over someone who isn't a family member then there's something wrong.

I hope Guru gets back to 100% health and I hope the situation between him, Solar and the Elam family gets sorted out to everyone's satisfaction.

  2. mad fucked...hard to understand how someone can drive that big of a wedge between a strong, intelligent person like Guru and not only his childhood friends and longtime creative partners, but his family as well.

watching that video was hard as hell. my heart goes out to Guru's family as much as it went out to him when I heard he'd fallen ill.

seriously, dunno what else to say except that this is mad, mad fucked up.

  3. I agree with everything written in this article.
I can't relay in words at how enraging this situation is.
My heart goes out to Guru's nephew and the rest of his fam.

Oh, and those triple exclamation points in his texts further solidifies that Solar was the only one defending Solar in the comments of the interview here. Fuckin clown.

  11. I saw this video and you dont mess with family and thats what he has done and it is hitting home with a lot of rappers out there and this sorry ass Solar just brought a lot of hate towards himself and really will have to watch his steps as people do not forget oh yeah his beats are garbage also lol.

  12. Man Im sorry Guru aint well, Im sorry he aint making the music he is capable of but for fucks sake hes a grown ass man and he can make his own decisions in life both good and what may seem fucked up to the rest of us. Dont go putting this all on some others head. The chorus from moment of truth seems apt to me: Actions have reactions, don't be quick to judge,You may not know the harships people don't speak of
It's best to step back, and observe with couth
For we all must meet our moment of truth.

Whatever the future holds it dont change the past.

  13. I feel for the nephew. Family buisness can be difficult at times. My Moms passed a few years ago and her father my grandfather wanted to make decisions on her funeral, she hadnt seen him for 30 years because of shit that had happened and yet because she hadnt written her express wishes this man who she hated had the last say over her. Get your wishes in order and written in a legal document or things like this end up happening and someone else ends up speaking in their/your voice.
Maybe this situation will cause people to revaluate life and decisions.
My best wishes to Guru and his loved ones.

  14. Wow... I don't know what's worse the apparent lack of communication from Solar, or the disrespectful comments above. Get well Guru

  15. Once Guru gets better, he needs to "re-organize" who's in his click and who has his best interest.

    ReplyDelete
  16. and the truth will set ALL of us free. Best for GURU and his family.

    ReplyDelete
  17. This isn't meant to be slanderous, or a reckless statement, but I couldn't see this much alienation or legal control in a situation, unless the two of them were more than just friends.

It is hard for me to believe that any man would allow another man to usurp a family's communication and influence over the course of years. This situation is, like what is listed in the title of the article, like what Yoko Ono did to John Lennon. And this generally doesn't happen among just friends. This is an abusive relationship. Regardless of whether or not this is any form of a gay relationship or just a business relationship and that Guru trust Solar that much as his boy.

First, I hope that Guru has a speedy recovery, physically. Second, I hope that Guru gets his head clear to determine what the hell has happened to his circle of family and friends over the past 6 years, and discovers the best way to truly to be happy.

I really hope that there is nothing else far worse that was contributing to the cardiac arrest, that he now has to contend with.

    Pooch

There been rumors for the past few years that these two share a bed and unfortunately, it been speculated that Guru has HIV or Hepatitis -- just look at the pictures of Keith lately -- its known he always had a problem hittin da bottle -- but even back in da gang starr day it was rumored that he was one of tha DL brothas in tha rap game -- there aint NO WAY that a MALE, especially a BLACK MALE, would sign over control of not only his estate during a medical procedure but HIS OWN LIFE as well -- yeah, this N^GGA gave SOLAR the ability to decide if he stay on LIFE SUPPORT if it come to that !!!!!!!! SORRY "TRU-SKOOL HEDZ" -------- BUT GURU IS A FAG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND I GUARANTEE THAT THE TRUTH WILL LITERALLY "COME OUT" IN THE NEAR FUTURE . . . . . . . WHO COULDNT TELL THAT SOLAR IS A QUEER ANYWAY - - ??

    ReplyDelete
  21. ^ Okay, cool it first of all. I don't know much about this situation, and the most important thing for Guru is his health right now, but:
IF the rumor you guys in the comments have started about Guru being in a gay relationship with Solar is true, which I have no way of verifying and have never heard before, SO WHAT? It's his choice and I don't give a sh!t if you all agree with me (and I'm obviously not a fan of Solar), but cut the homophobic crap out. Again, I'm not defending Solar in any way. But show some freaking respect to Guru; the man is just starting to recover, and that's the most important part for him and his family now.

  22. It really seems as though Guru and Solar are gay lovers, and I'm not trying to be mean.

  23. Good words Teddy, couldnt agree more.
    Get well soon Guru.

  24. He....Is...... A........ H.O.M.O.. . .. . . . ... it hurts to accept it because im sure a lot of yall internet hiphoppers looked at him in a father-figure/big brotha type of way . .. .and some of yall hipster softies thats 30+ prolly looked at him like he was some intimidating thug nigga .. .. .. .. .BUT. . ... . just ask Krumbsnatcha what he seen and heard backstage back in 2002 / /// / // // P.A.U.S.E

  25. If he's really a fag, I'd rather not know. That information is not relevent to me. Gotta separate the person's personal life from the music sometimes.
Still, I hope it's not true.

    ReplyDelete
  26. ...who cares if he's gay?...guru made some classic hiphop albums, he's a dope rapper and therefore one of my heroes in this game!...destroy all the homophobic wannabe-hard idiots!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Apolo did you even read my comment? I said being gay is his choice and it doesn't matter. It's irrelevant and I'm tired of the homophobic bullshit from guys like you. Where did I say anything about liking "masculine" hip-hop. What the fuck does that even mean? Learn to fucking read first, man, for real.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Whatever that just was, get well Guru.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh, and I'M an outsider? Get the fuck out of here. Don't bring that race sh!t in here son, you're the one who's living under a rock. I listen to real hip-hop, I don't care if it's hard, jazzy, smooth, whatever as long as it's REAL. What the fuck do you listen to? I'm not going to get into an argument with you but your ignorance is astounding.
And yeah I don't know what being Asian has to do with anything right now, but for your information yes I'm Chinese. And you're black (probably, although you could be a "35 year old Euro"), which is completely irrelevant --pause-- Anyways, I really don't even know what the fuck you were trying to say man, but I'll let you sort that out. You definitely misread my comment, too.

  32. Daily Operation managed to up the ante another notch, as the crew responded to the misguided ‘Jazz Rap’ tag by unleashing a stripped-down, unapologetic declaration of hardcore beats and rhymes. While the ‘in-crowd’ was busy shouting corny chants and multiple beat change-ups, Gangstarr unleashed unyielding loops, sparse tracks and scratched hooks. Gifted Unlimited proved time and time again that it wasn’t ‘Mostly Tha Voice’ after all, as his in-the-cut delivery and brutally honest worldview provided the ideal compliment to the stark tracks. And who could forget the timeless b-side insanity that is ‘DWYCK’…

For anybody that was yet to be convinced for some inexplicable reason, Hard To Earn delivered the knock-out blow in 1994, as the Gangstarr Foundation were given even more exposure (following ‘Speak Ya Clout’ from the previous project), as Melachi The Nutcracker, Big Shug, Lil’ Dap and Jeru The Damaja got a little shine. Moment of Truth proved that only were they still relevant in a rapidly-changing commercial landscape, but still had a few tricks up their sleeve as well (such as getting Scarface on a track), while even the troubled The Ownerz had some gems on it.

The legendary status of Gang Starr is rarely questioned, so that’s not the issue here. The problem is that many Johnny-come-lately’s want to try and diminish the contributions of GURU to the Gang Starr sound. They insist that Premier’s tracks carried him, his rhyme styleis too basic or that the crew would have been better with someone else handling vocal duties. These people are morons. Not only did GURU co-produce every record that the crew ever released, but he’s been responsible for more classic quotes and vocal hooks than you might initially realize. ‘Shorty said nah, pulled the trigger and stepped….’ ring any bells? Despite any misgivings you might have about the Jazzmattaz projects, if nothing else I’m sure GURU bagged some bad-ass jazz broads over in France on the strength of that shit. Please take moment to stop jocking Preme and acknowledge the vet that is Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal, and wish him a speedy recovery while you’re at it.

  33. As you would have heard by now, Keith E.E. ‘The Guru’ is seriously ill following a heart-attack. While there has been a flood of support from his friends and fans, this sad news has also given fuel to trolling douche bags to take some cheap shots at the man. Don’t get it twisted, bent-up or confused – at the height of their career, nobody was touching Gang Starr when it came to the classic MC / DJ combination. Not even Pete Rock & CL Smooth can match their legacy when you consider that The GURU and DJ Premier gave us three of the greatest rap albums ever made. Once Keith E.E. broke out from the Gangstarr Posse in Boston and hopped a Greyhound to the Rotten Apple – where he was soon to be paired-up with Texan DJ Premier – it was on like Donkey Kong. Following some early 12″s with The 45 King, No More Mr. Nice Guy introduced the world to the group known as Gang Starr in all their rough-around-the-edges glory.

Despite a horrible cover and some low-budget recording (“first album took us two weeks”), the record contained enough sparks of originality to catch the attention of everyone who wasn’t born legally deaf. Once the ‘Manifest’ and ‘Positivity’ remixes hit, we were offered a glimpse into the true potential that these two outta state characters were about to display. When Step In The Arena hit the following year, it showcased the phenomenal development of the crew. Premier had since cut his teeth on Lord Finesse’s debut album, and the time spent rubbing shoulders in the studio with Showbiz and Diamond D clearly paid off, as his sampling and programming techniques were now cutting-edge, while GURU had evolved from his self-conscious ‘posititive’ content of his earlier lyrics into a self-assured intelligent hoodlum persona. There was nothing else really like it when it dropped – eighteen tracks, some clocking in at under two minutes? …Arena was fresh, original and raw without pandering to the trends of the day. Resistance was futile once ‘Just To Get A Rep’ hit…

  34. PREME! PREME! PREME! PREME! We already know what happens when Guru f's w/ someone else. Premo and Guru, so what was the point of copying and pasting that long ass post

    Get well soon brotha

    ReplyDelete
  35. Wow, some of these posts sound like Guru's publicist is posting on here. Anyway, I hope he gets well soon. He's made some dope, classic shit and some horrible, unlistenable shit. He is an average (to below average) rapper who benefitted from one of the greatest producers of all time. Anyone who says that any of Guru's non-Premo stuff is anywhere close to Gang Starr quality needs an ear examination. Still, Guru is a big part of some timeless music and that means a lot. Bottom line is that Guru is in the books. I understand that his (alleged) gayness has some street implications, but musically it doesn't matter.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I still don't see how heads try to claim that Guru has been below average when he's penned some of the greatest songs, imo, in hip hop. Sure, his solo shit, especially with solar, sucks.
But his verses on all gangstarr records were top notch.
I think people who minimalize his gang starr verses are some kneejerking new jack faggots, tbh.

  39. Big fan of Guru's as an MC. I grew up listening to his music, so was devastated to hear he had a heart attack. I haven't paid much attention to Guru (or anyone else!) for a while now, so can't comment on his material over tha last 5 years.

Also, If don't know the facts about something, I think it'spointless speculating about anything. My only statement can be that I wish him well with his recovery.

    God bless all.
