The Midwest Lineup 1989-2005


Steppin' to the plate today we have a bunch of hard hitters out of the bread belt. I am bringing you volumes 3-5 in my midwest series First to bat is number three which is the only one of 21 volumes with a few tracks that came out in 2000 or later. One of my favorite cuts here is definitely 'Phantoms Of The Opera'. I know this classic banger has been heard around the way for years and I had to include it here. Essential underground vs the industry type rap. I can't get enough of the beat on 'Two Trains'. Maybe the sound is not your thing but it's played around here all the time. Also check out the beat on 'In Sync'. If anyone wants to hear it I'd be glad to post the full 'Weightless Recordings Battle Raps & Freestyles' release one of these days. Volume 4 --

Kinda on the gangsta tip this time. Playya 1000 is the kind of sound that makes me crank the system. Maybe it's the drawl, maybe it's the infectious beat. Whatever, turn it up. Another one of my favorite tracks is number 6. K-Stone was a veteran of the Detroit Scene. If anyone out there can provide us a comprehensive disograpny of his work that would be dope. I know he had at least 5 releases I can think of. Next up is that timeless midwest anthem from D 2 Tha S. 'Dissin these fools'. Cold blooded lyrics, a moody beat, what more do you need ? Volume 5 --

Volume 5 is one the volumes I like most of all 21 midwest compilations I've put together. The remix for 'Suicide' is dope as hell. I'm not really a fan of Twista but this track is tight. Another standout is 'Detroit Madness'. This is probably the best thing on his album. To be honest Daddy Hill can't rap his way out of a paper bag but the cheesy beat and female background vocals have me hooked like crack. Make sure to listen up when 'Streetwise' comes on. This is one of the doper selections from 'The Hidden Talent Disk'. The album is a bit 'mixed' and unfortunately lives up to it's name on a few songs. Sometimes I like to rescue good cuts from the sea of mediocrity by which they are surrounded so I don't forget about them. Here's a link and the tracklist.

  1. Hey just a small issue...on your volume 3, you have a cut from Hypnotic the Native Sun on there.

    Now if it's the same Hypnotic I'm thinking of (and he had an album in 1998) he's actually from the Bay Area, California and was with a crew named Kemetic Suns (Fundementals, King Koncepts, Karma Chi, Kirby Dominant, Audiotrons etc.)

  4. that is the same hypnotic from la.. its from his album internal symmetry.. it would be nice if these comps were actually put together with some knowledge as opposed to just grabbing a bunch of random mp3s and putting them together. easiest way to make sure you don't make mistakes like this? rip shit that you own, instead of just posting mp3s you collected.

    I do these regional compilations because I enjoy doing so, not to be 100 percent accurate all the time. And just so you know, I DO rip music for my compilations, all the time. These compilations ARE put together with some knowledge, but it is not encyclopedic. Sometimes information on artists is not readily available. Maybe instead of whining about how one track from the 3 compilations I posted is not midwest you could recognize the amount of time and work I DO put into these compilations. Then again, I am sure you are one of those people who leave these kinds of comments to feel smug, but not because you downloaded the music i shared or bothered to appreciate all the selections which ACTUALLY are from the midwest.

    Obviously with 310 different compilations being made in total as of now there ought to be some tracks which is avaliable on the internet for download or has been in the past.

    What the fuck is your problem man? I don't get it.

    you're right, nobody is forcing me to read this page, but that's the beautiful part of the internet. i have the freedom to read it all i like it, just as i have the freedom to criticize you for 'making' compilations which are nothing more than you scanning your hard drive for mp3s. The fact this website has the audacity to ask for donations when you're simply an mp3 aggregate is mindblowing to me. If you actually owned any of these records, all the information is there, but because you just downloaded mp3s, you simply don't know. and this is not the first time either. i mean, where did you get the info that he was from mpls? was that on the cd? cause its not on my cd. as i stated above, with a few notable exceptions, if you owned the record/cd/tape, its pretty fucking crystal clear where shit is from.

    this is just fucking lazy, that's all. stop pretending like you're doing a lot when all you're doing is making random compilations out of mp3s you downloaded. anyone can do that, i guess i expect better from the website, forgive me for having standards.

I could use a fraction of those comps if they actually came from the dude himself and had knowledge dropped on me as opposed to what he's doing now.

  10. no hate on mp3s, whatsoever.. my hate is towards someone doing next-to-no-work and then taking credit for other peoples work (the people who actually ripped the tracks) and on top of that having the audacity to ask philaflava readers to donate. so, to clarify, my beef is: taking credit for other peoples work as he clearly did not rip these tracks himself (check out other similiar blogs where people provide ORIGINAL content, not some aggregate of mp3s that schnect has collected since his soulseek days) and then on top of that, to ask people to donate for this 'service'.. thats just un-fucking-believable to me.. at no point has he put in any effort in these volumes beyond collecting mp3s.. maybe i'm just old school where work was real and actually involved effort and wasn't just collecting a bunch of other peoples works and claiming it as your own.

    spitler: There's so many ways that you are wrong here that I don't even know where to start, so I'll start on your last comment.

    1. Donate: Nobody has been asked to donate. There has never been any ultimatums made and/or begging done here. There is a button that people can press if they would like to help maintain our file sharing accounts, they can. If they don't want to or can't, they don't have to, nothing will change here. For the record, I pay $70 a year to megaupload, rapidshare, mediafire, and divshare, EACH. That's $280 a year to keep our readers laced with dopeness. And you sit there and complain, you insufferable little prick. Of course, anonymously, you do this, "spitler".

    2. "Hardly no work": You didn't even believe this yourself when you typed it, did you? If so, you are more than welcome to compile THOUSANDS of regional specific compilations like s.fan has and make your own little blog of them. But make sure you own every single mp3 first, faggot.
    I think it's a little tougher to do the compiling than the ripping. I know this because I do both.

    You are wrong about much more, but I am not beat to sit here and plot it all out for you. You sound like a menstruating ho. Drink some cranberry juice and relax.

    i spent over 300 dollars of my OWN money to put together the 6th volume of bmore/dc series. that is just ONE example. i have spent so much money on music i rip for my compilations that i have lost track of my investment. also if you have not noticed i have provided a fair amount of 'original' content on the blog here too. fact is, i spend my money all the time on music, some of which i use for my compilations. you are so far off base it's no wonder you look like a clown. no-one else is doing these regional compilations and it's not always possible to get the right info at the time i am putting a compilation together. do me a favor and go find someone else to whine out. this is not your playground and it's not recess kiddo.

    and no, compiling mp3s is not more work than ripping, and for a second i thought you actually did rip records, but you obviously don't if you think that. ripping records takes time and patience, something that you and s.fan seem to overlook when taking credit for other peoples work (read: ripping the records/tapes/cds) instead of searching your itunes/winamp/whatever the fuck you use to 'compile' these compilations. as for your offer for me to make these compilations.. if you're going to compare it to the work of s.fan, sure.. cause i can just as easily throw together a bunch of random mp3s from my itunes and call it UNDERGROUND SEATTLE RAP .. and then when people call me out for it not being from seattle, i'll just call them whiny bitches.

  18. spitler, I don't recognize your name from ebay or anywhere else I buy records from. But I guess it's possible being that I do buy records on the reg. Not that it means anything at all. Music is music, regardless of format.

    First off, I do rip stuff on a regular basis. It is not difficult but yes, it is time consuming.
    I would think it's even easier for dudes who have USB turntables, but I have a pain in the ass setup, so it is indeed time consuming.
    But I can definitely state with confidence that the VLS posts that I've done have been much, much easier than any other blog posts I have done.

    You're really minimalizing and completely dismissing s.fan's work here. I get what you're saying about not all of the mp3s being ripped by him. But it's clearly not "just a bunch of random mp3s thrown together in a folder".
    He does his best to try to put them in their specific regions, which nobody on the internet is doing and many appreciate. Some of them he put together years ago before he had further info and sometimes he's off about a couple of them. But c'mon now, a few mistakes, in the grand scheme of this cat's work, is nothing.

    Certainly nothing to rant about on a blog that blesses heads with dopeness on a daily basis.

    The donate thing, well, we're just gonna have to agree to disagree on that. I would say mostly nobody even notices the button is there and certainly not many have clicked it.

    verge: i can appreciate your commentary much more when you speak like an adult and don't decide to just rag on me. i have been ripping vinyl for 12 years, so believe me i know first hand how time consuming it can be. i was also a writer on rebirth magazine, which predates your blog by about 10 years, and have had my own blog/written for other blogs so i can understand that writing a post can be time consuming as well. and yes, there are a fair amount of informative posts on this blog, and i give you guys credit for those. However, let's take a look at this particular post, and hell any of s.fan's compilation posts. Is there any knowledge dropped here at all? Was there any research required for it beyond the guess-work of where rappers/groups were from? Lets see.. i get the insight that "K-Stone was a veteran of the Detroit Scene." Not even anything to back up that statement.. so the rest is his opinion on the tracks, so please, am i missing something here or what exact knowledge has been dropped in this post?
    As far as soliciting money for other people's work.. thats exactly what you do when you post other people's rips on your site and then ask for donations. Check any of your OLU rips.. ironically enough, I believe FTD (yes I know they ripped those) took a shot at you guys on the last OLU rip you posted here. That's somebody else's work (the ripping of vinyl is work as it takes time and effort, which is essentially what work is), that you're posting here. It's a lot more work than giving your opinion on a bunch of mp3s that you collected and decided to put into a compilation. So if you think s.fan is 'putting in work' on these compilations, i don't see how the people who take the time and effort to rip them originally are not putting in time and work. and if you agree with my logic so far, then you can see why i made the statement of soliciting money for other people's work. The fact you want to bring up the argument of who created the music, blah blah, just leads me to believe that maybe you're not ripping the records you claim, because anyone I know who rips records considers that work.

    A great example I can think of is noz over at cocaine blunts. He rips all of his own stuff, and never once asked for a donation until his computer died and REQUIRED money so that people could keep enjoying his site. The money went so that he could put in work for his site so that people could enjoy it. Not so that he could grab other peoples rips of mp3s, etc and then claim them as his own.
    And perhaps I am mistaken, my ebay seller name is not spitler, but if you're name is Paul and you live in NJ, then yes, you did buy records from me.

  24. Spitler, yes indeed, my real name is Paul and I live in Jersey. So yeah, I must have bought off you recently. I started going by verge and wrote toy ass graffiti in 1990, so it's no secret, I don't hide my id. Anyone can hit me at verge001@yahoo.com anytime. I still don't know exactly who you are though, but that's neither here nor there. I've only been online for under two years and can't possibly know everybody and their aliases.
    You originally got an overly defensive response from me because, as you know, you're not the first person to attack this blog. It's usually done by the same few suspect trolls.

    Now, the OLU posts were taken from the T.R.O.Y. forum and some were my own rips. The ones taken from the forum, well, we didn't know they weren't from the people who posted them until after the fact. Anything after that, credit was given to FTD and wherever else they came from. Matter fact, anything not from us gets credit given to where it came from.
    And it's strongly encouraged for anybody even on the forum to do so whenever possible.

    I can't speak for where s.fan gets some of his rips from, personally. All I know is that I enjoy having the music separated by regional affiliation and I appreciate the work he does in doing so. Yes, he makes mistakes here and there, but it's okay, imo. The readers can help fill in the blanks and correct stuff, making it more fun and interactive, imo.

    I don't just bow down to the "og ripper" thing much anymore because of all the arguments and pompousness that has unfolded over this issue. From people bragging about what they have and not sharing, to people acting like they deserve a vh1 honor award for sharing. I'm just tired of the entire argument, which is partially why you sparked a negative comment from me.
    I strongly believe that anyone who shares music that is hard to find and actually good, is making their own contribution to the hip hop blogosphere. There's no way I would have gone tracking all this stuff in sfan's compilations down if he didn't make them.
    The way people get so argumentative and possessive over it gets out of hand. The argument itself shouldn't exist.
    Either share or don't.

    A lot of people kinda miss the point of the internet. Which is partially to share and COMPILE information. Whether you take it from various places and make it into something that nobody else felt like doing or take some of your own music along with others and compile into it's own entity, as long as it's original.

    I always prefer that the og uploaders get their credit, but I also understand that it's not always possible to remember every place or person you get everything from, all the time.
    I've seen my rips out there plenty with no credit given to me and it doesn't bother me like it does other people. I'm just glad that good music is circulating. Of course, it would be nice if I was recognized for it, but so goes the internet. It's just a record. Now bigger things, like comprehensive pieces or focused compilations, are another story.

Nobody is putting a gun to your head. Nobody has ever forced anyone to give us respect or a donation. People appreciate the work that goes into this place and we return the favor by providing dope pieces day in and day out.

    This is no different from when ACTHEPD comments on Sounds Like The 90s. The reality is, if you aren't a fan then don't come here. I don't still eat at restaurants I don't like. Verge, no i was not trying to embarrass you, nor did i post 'half of your info', i simply asked if your name was indeed paul and you were in nj so i could confirm that you had indeed bought records from me and that you could just as easily know my information, thus negating your anonymous comment about me. and looking at the feedback left by both of us, it was a pleasant transaction, so i don't see the need to tarnish my ebay name (even though that's not my ebay name). if i really wanted to fuck with you paul, i'd post all your info or give it to the people who think your a bunch of bottom feeders, but i didn't, because outside of your childish attacks on me, i really don't have any issues with you besides your blind support of scheissefan. as for disrespecting his work, i just went over the first post i said, and here are my exact words:

Our readers are more than welcome, if not, encouraged to challenge us. But this argument just didn't seem warranted, in my opinion.

    For the record: spitler is definitely not the ebay seller I thought he was. He's actually a pretty decent seller. So is the other guy, aside from that one problem.

    There is no entire forum of people out there that calls us all bottomfeeders. Maybe some people from a certain forum do, but definitely not all. I know this because I am acquaintances with a few of them.
    If they did, so it be.
    And I highly doubt that anyone there has any personal problem with me to the extent that they would take my info and use it in a negative way.
    But, whatever is whatever. End of story.

    How could anyone think that you were being negative Spitler??? Well it is probably in the fact that your words were rather condescending. To make it easier for you to understand that word, it means talking down to someone. (See how that works). It is simply a change in tone. Instead of just pointing out what is wrong with something, maybe you should've pointed out that you know how much time or effort that they themselves have contributed to this blog, and that you found some misinformation. Then, if you really wanted to be a benefit to the process, you could've offered your knowledge and services for anything in the future. It could've been worded something like "Hey schenectadyfan, I have a vast collection and have a lot of knowledge about hip hop, I would love to help you guys out, especially with some of the back stories or tidbits on the compilitions."

    This site has been a great source of material (both mp3 and information) to so many people. It also has continued to help so many readers feel reconnected to the great material that we have listened to in the past, and the enormous amount of music that feel through the cracks.

    Forgive my tone on this but.... It really pisses me off to think that one person can come in (to this or any other blog), and drop an anonymous comment in a rather condescending manner, and make the contributer(s) to the website and the author question why the hell they are spending countless hours of their time, and their money, for such unappreciative a$$holes.

    Whether, or not, this is how you wanted your comments take Spitler, this is probably how it was taken.

    We need to have contributers, like the ones at TROY, to continue to do the jobs that they do. They help to provide the Public Library of Hip Hop running and available. Even if a couple of pieces have misinformation. If you know something is incorrect, hit them up and let them know, so that you helping the process. (Can you imagine trying to find the music and information one groups that are feature on these sites and compiltations, without the TROY's of world????)

    Thank You TROY, schenectadyfan, verge, and the rest of you guys. I can't imagine enjoying the amount of quality hip hop material, without you guys. You guys truly enhance the Hip Hop scene.
