Great Introductions

One of the greatest things about music is discovering new artists. Whether it's the case today, years ago hip-hop was always about helpin' others get on. There was a certain element in the music was more authentic. The chemistry was real and more importantly rappers were motivated by their competitive nature, not potential endorsements. There are tons of memorable debuts such as AZ on "Life's A Bitch," Jay-Z on "Hawaiian Sophie" or 2Pac on D.U.'s "Same Song." For some, careers were made on just one verse.

Dres sez Da La iz Dead ... Retarded Uncles

Update: Dres of the Black Sheep responded via Twitter to my inquiry about a nearly unintelligible lyric from "The Choice Is Yours."

The line in question has been misinterpreted on the internet for years as "Deaf retarded uncles in the parties where they rest." Further investigation on some rap CSI shit showed that the lyric must be closer to "Dead retarded uncles, in pease porridge may they rest" and then Dres confirmed it once and for all.

His response begs a few questions:

1) Why "retarded"? Is this yet another Native Tongue in-joke? An "ill subliminal"?

2) Is Dres unaware of the numerous excellent Twitter apps for the iphone? Or is he *gasp* using a Windows Mobile or Symbian phone?

3) If we had Twitter back in the Golden Era, would BDK have been able to thwarts the AIDS rumor almost immediately?

The future is now, yo!

Producer Highlight - Mel Man

The story starts with the Bulworth Soundtrack. I am trying to find some good songs in between so much bullshit, and then BLAM! I hear "Eve of Destruction" by Eve. I don't even like Eve, but I had that track on repeat for about an hour. I was like, this shit has GOT to be produced by Dre. But then I find out it was done Mel-Man. "What?". Yup, it was that dude on Dre's Chronic 2001. I had to investigate more.

After much investigation I realized that Dre was nothing more than an Andy Warhol of hiphop. He was using other producers and polishing their shit, then signing his signature on the shit. But I digress.

After very little investigation, 'cause shit, Mel Man is like that king that made gold out of anything he touched, i found the West Coast's version of Marley Marl "House of Hits".

He has Xzibit's X, Eminem's "The Real Slim Shady" and, well, the whole Chronic 2001, under his belt. I won't even include those tracks on my compilation, except The Watcher, because this track is absolutely Mel-Man, and I am willing to bet Dre didn't do even a fuckin minute of work on this track.

I know this is getting too long for all us ADD's out here... but I GOTTA mention the fact that Mel-Man's behind Nate Dogg's "I Pledge Allegiance", which just happens to have hiphop's best sample ever, only after Prince Paul's "Music For the Stetfully Insane".

Say What, Say What? - Dres Of Black Sheep

This installment of "Say What, Say What?" is not so much about calling anyone out, so much as it is asking for clarification. Bear with me.

Now, we are all familiar with Black Sheep's surprisingly deep discography and respect their talent and musical innovation. At the very least, anyone who hasn't been living in a cave for the past twenty years is familiar with their biggest hit "The Choice Is Yours (Revisited)."

One of the lines in the song has always eluded my comprehension. Right after "I got brothers on a Jungle, cousins on a Quest" Dres utters a line that confounds me. Every lyrics source online suggests that says "Deaf retarded uncles in the parties where they rest." Okay, it sort of sounds like that's what he's saying ... but if that is the actual lyric, what in the fuck does it even mean? Black Sheep definitely have their share of cryptic or challenging lyrics, but seriously, what's going on here?

Anyone care to shed some light?

The T.R.O.Y. forum's newest moderator ODnet, recently posted a poll which pits anti-bitchassness anthems Screwball "F.A.Y.B.A.N." and Onyx "Bichasniguz" against each other. My personal preference leans towards Screwball. Firstly, I prefer the darker, conspiracy-obsessed 1995 incarnation of Onyx to their initial obstreperous "Mad Face Invasion" image, and more importantly, Screwball are just better at castigating their targets. In my humble opinion, that is. Get your vote one in the ongoing thread and let us know which song most effectively addresses the centuries-old problem of bitch ass niggas.

DJ Drez: Rare Soul Volumes 1-3

It's been said before: we here at the TROY blog may place the most emphasis on hip hop from the Golden Age, but we're simply not that one-dimensional either. Go ahead, scour the blog and you'll find numerous posts on sampling, breaks, and rare funk and soul records. We're not just about the rap itself, but also where it comes from and to whom it pays homage. This is where DJ Drez' Rare Soul mix series comes in.

DJ Drez is, quite simply, one of the nicest DJs on the West Coast right now and a personal favorite of mine. He's been down with Project Blowed and Abstract Tribe Unique for the longest, so you know that he's on that jazzy organic vibe. He's aso created dozens of unique mixtapes spanning every musical genre imaginable, including straight-up hip hop, reggae, middle eastern jahta vibes, you name it. If it's defined as music, chances are he's run it through two Technics and a mixer.

The four-volume Rare Soul series is Drez' testament to the loop diggas; non-stop, fresh-as-hell mixtapes chock-full of samples and breaks, some instantly recognizable and some extremely obscure. You know, vibes 'n stuff. These joints are perfect for finding a little beat-making inspiration yourself or simply cooling out on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Don't misunderstand; this isn't like every other half-assed mix of recycled Dusty Fingers samples floating around. Drez' crates are mad deep and he comes with the hard-to-find breakbeats on the reggy-reg. Despite the presence of the word soul in the title, Dr. EZ Smooth never focuses on that one genre, instead choosing to bounce back and forth between dub reggae, 70's soul, afrobeat, and jazz. In short, don't sleep because these mixes are incredible.

Unfortunately, the first four volumes of Rare Soul are currently out of print, but there are plenty of other Drez mixtapes still available over at Access Hip Hop. At ten dollars a pop, they're worth thier weight in gold. I've peeped around nine or so of his other tapes and so far none of them have disappointed.

Help A Blogger Out: Won't Catch Me Runnin'

A couple of weeks ago, our brother from SteadyBloggin', Magneto, informed the T.R.O.Y. forum of a different Ras Kass

verse that isn't on any of the Won't Catch Me Runnin versions that we can find. Philaflava contacted the man himself

about this rumored verse. Ras Kass confirmed that there is a version with this verse in existence. But he did not tell

us what it is on or where to find it. Rumors on the T.R.O.Y. forum are stating that there was a Soul On Ice EP. Not

the demo, or the sampler, but another EP.

So, can anybody out there help us to uncover this gem piece?

I've never heard of said EP, but Ras confirmed the existense of the verse, so I'm sure it's possible that this EP exists.

Ras Kass - Non-Album Tracks (1994-1996)

Ras Kass is easily one of my favorite MCs of all time, but I'm mostly just a fan of his mid-90s discography. Fortunately, he recorded quite a few tracks in between the years of 1994 and 1996, and he also blessed several radio shows with ill pre-written freestyles. Three volumes worth of non-album tracks is no small feat - that's more than Organized Konfusion had in between the years of 1989 and 1998.

Our regular forum poster soopacee, from Pottsville PA, was always blessing us with his tape rips, Philly artists. Amongst all of his rips, I chose to blog this one. I don't know nothing about Sun Risers. The meaning behind their names, their other releases, and any other facts remain shrouded in mystery. But all of that actually doesn't matter, because this album will never collect dust. Expect to play it weekly. Am I right?

Wu-Tang Clan “Dirty & Stinkin’ (Bootleg Vinyl)”

And by Wu-Tang Clan I really mean the one and only... Ol' Dirty Bastard. This was by far one of my favorite non-album tracks that ever surfaced. This bootleg vinyl was another one of my prized scores from the mid to late 90's while I scoured all over Chicago buying just about anything Wu-Tang I could get my hands on (I think I'm still paying off my credit card bills).

So that was the good and now comes the bad and the ugly. In 2001 there was a promo cd single that surfaced containing some horrible whack ass Main Mix and a Remix for "Dirty & Stinkin'." This time around they threw in Method Man to try and save things. Complete failure. Almost as bad, in the same year there was Phil Collins cover album called Urban Renewal. Ol' Dirty's contributions was "Sussudio." Even DJ Clark Kent had his hand in it and they totally killed it, in a very bad way. If you care to hear how people ruined such a great track, grab it below.

Thanks to the T.R.O.Y. forum somebody laced me with a link that is now bookmarked for life. The Rub is a weekly radio show done on Brooklyn Radio that consists of the talented DJ Cosmo, DJ Eleven and DJ Ayres. I can't stress how dope their mixes are. No worries about self-indulgent drops or hacky blends, these cats put in work. All their mixes are well thought-out with the perfection execution and quality selections.

Muhammad Speaks sheist. Jesus Christo rock 'em sock 'em robots you to the death. I-Self manifests today’s degree and swigs tonic. Urchins stumble on this intersection just to meet a trident head-on. Premier laced them a great beat with jazzy gang starr flavor. Krak Da Weazel is probably my favorite track on Contemporary Jeep Music after Tears.
